We have an exciting new opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer interested in decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit.

Our Carbon Shift consulting business is focussed on the delivery of realisable climate action and net zero plans and is supported by delivery capability in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EVs, smart buildings and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed a strong expertise and client base around net zero and energy transition and is now moving expand this offer into offering solutions to the broader climate adaptation and resilience challenge.

Key activities

The Electrical Design Engineer will support the development of renewable heat and power projects. This role will focus on the engineering and design development of commercial / utility-scale renewable electricity and heat projects, working within a team of multidisciplinary engineers.

1. To prepare electrical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new-build energy centres and heat networks, taking a RIBA 1 brief to RIBA 4 technical design.
2. To carry out electrical load assessments and size switchgear, distribution systems and equipment
3. To carry out calculations using proprietary software, and understand various installation and reference methods used in calculations.
4. To prepare design models, utilising proprietary design software, such as AutoCAD and REVIT
5. To utilise application specific software, such as PVSyst and Dialux
6. Prepare calculations and engineering analysis for the purpose of validating simulation models, confirming systems design requirements and performances
7. Work within a multidisciplinary design team, collaborating with mechanical, structural / civil, architectural, energy and specialist designers to produce coordinated designs
8. Support market research to identify new and emerging technology / design innovations and assess suitability for application to projects
9. Support technical options appraisals to qualify / quantify best available techniques for low carbon systems
10. Prepare design / functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes
11. Lead / contribute to Design Stage Reports and associated customer-facing documents
12. Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimise health, safety and environmental risks associated with designs prepared
13. With support from colleagues, understand and comply with statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements applicable to design
14. With support from colleagues, understand and account for physical and environmental constraints associated with design processes and outputs
15. Preparation and processing of Distribution Network Operator applications
16. Where applicable, work alongside BIM specialists to provide relevant modelling/design information
17. Undertake non-invasive engineering surveys to support and validate design processes
18. Interpret survey information from others and accommodate within design
19. Undertake technical support during construction and commissioning phases

Skills, qualifications & experience

20. An advanced level of understanding of low-voltage electrical systems design (general)
21. Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and the Building Regulations
22. Good knowledge of BS: and IET technical guidance notes.
23. Aware of health and safety and CDM regulations.
24. Is able to produce schematic layouts and single line diagrams for electrical systems from concept to detailed design (with assistance from senior engineers)
25. Knowledge of lighting, small power / switchgear, data, fire alarm, security and access control systems in context to the role.
26. Aware of stakeholder involvement within the project life cycle
27. Aware of environmental, cultural and health and safety issues associated with the design of systems
28. Able to prepare draft specifications, stage reports, tender documentation
29. Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD and REVIT
30. Competent in standard Microsoft Office products i.e. word, excel, outlook, teams etc.
31. Understanding of environmental factors affecting electrical design
32. Excellent communication skills written, oral etc
