The Role

Tameside Children’s Services is seeking a dedicated and motivated Social Worker to join our fostering team, which includes supervising connected carers and conducting assessments of connected carers. As a Fostering Social Worker, you will work to secure permanency plans for children in Tameside and contribute to our broader services for children in care.

This rewarding role involves ensuring children and young people are placed with foster carers best suited to their needs, in a safe and nurturing environment that aligns with Tameside’s commitment to quality care.

We value social workers with the right values, enthusiasm for strength-based relationship social work with children and families, and a desire for professional growth. You will receive regular supervision and work in a supportive culture committed to effective social work practice and your development.

About You

You will be a qualified Social Worker with relevant experience and strong assessment skills. You should be highly motivated, committed, and passionate about making a positive impact on children, young people, and families. You will demonstrate professional curiosity, a drive to improve standards, and a focus on achieving better outcomes.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and professionals. You should have a thorough understanding of statutory requirements and Fostering National Minimum Standards, along with skills in detailed assessments, including court reports.

We seek candidates who enjoy working within a large team, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and are eager to develop their practice further.

About Us

Message from Jill Colbert, Director of Children’s Services:

“I joined the council in 2025 and was immediately impressed by the warmth, openness, and energy of our colleagues. I came to Tameside because I believe we can do great things for our families. We are on a significant improvement journey, with ambitious plans to make meaningful changes for children and families. Our services are growing, and we have a dedicated Social Work Academy and clear progression pathways. We are investing in innovation and improvement to support families effectively, from family hubs to safeguarding.”

At Tameside, we are dedicated to enabling all citizens to lead fulfilling and healthy lives. We support economic growth, high-quality health and care services, and the creation of strong, self-sufficient communities.

We recognize that our staff are our greatest resource. Our values—Support, Trust, Respect, Integrity, Value Diversity, and Engage—are central to our practice and culture. We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, with this role subject to enhanced disclosure checks.

Appointments will start at the bottom of the grade with annual increments. Higher starting salaries may be considered if justified by previous relevant experience. The role requires a professional qualification at Level 6 or above, at least two years of post-qualification experience, and membership of a regulated body where applicable. The position is customer-facing and requires a specified level of spoken English. Sponsorship is not available.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion and will consider reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. Our benefits package is available for review.

Please note, previous applicants need not reapply.
