To assess, diagnose, and deliver evidence-based speech, language, and communication interventions for children and young people within a school setting, supporting their access to learning, inclusion, and overall educational outcomes. The postholder will work collaboratively with teaching staff, SEN teams, parents/carers, and external professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Therapeutic Practice
*
Assess pupils’ speech, language, communication, and social interaction needs using formal and informal assessment tools
*
Develop and deliver individual and group intervention programmes
*
Write clear therapy plans, reports, and recommendations
*
Monitor progress and adapt interventions accordingly
*
Support pupils with a range of needs, including:
*
Speech sound disorders
*
Developmental language disorder (DLD)
*
Autism spectrum condition (ASC)
*
Social communication difficulties
*
SEMH-related communication needs
Educational Support
*
Work closely with teachers and SENCOs to embed SALT strategies into the classroom
*
Contribute to EHCPs, annual reviews, and multi-agency meetings
*
Provide advice and training to school staff and teaching assistants
*
Support inclusive practice and access to the curriculum
Collaboration & Communication
Liaise with parents/carers to support carryover of strategies at home
Work collaboratively with educational psychologists, occupational therapists, and health professionals
Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
Professional Practice
*
Maintain accurate clinical records in line with professional standards
*
Ensure practice is compliant with safeguarding, GDPR, and school policies
*
Engage in CPD, supervision, and reflective practice
*
Contribute to service development and whole-school approaches to communication
Qualifications (Essential)
*
Degree or postgraduate qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
*
Registration with HCPC (Health and Care Professions xsngvjr Council)
*
Membership of RCSLT (or willingness to join)
*
Right to work in the UK
*
Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain)
Experience (Essential)
Experience working as a qualified SALT with children and young people
Experience delivering interventions in education or community settings
Knowledge of SEND legislation, including EHCP processes
Ability to work independently and manage a caseload
Experience (Desirable)
Experience working in school settings (mainstream or specialist)
Experience supporting pupils with ASC, SEMH, or complex needs
Experience delivering training to school staff
Experience contributing to whole-school communication strategies
