Environmental Advisor
Location: Chesterfield / Hybrid
Salary: Up To £60,000 Per Annum DOE
Role
This role will play a key part in driving environmental compliance, sustainability, and continual improvement across multiple operational projects. This position would suit a hands-on environmental professional who enjoys balancing strategic input with operational delivery, while working closely with project teams, clients, and stakeholders in a fast-paced infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead environmental performance across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with legal, client, and internal requirements
2. Provide expert environmental advice and guidance to project teams and senior stakeholders
3. Support the implementation of environmental strategy, sustainability initiatives, and Net Zero objectives
4. Conduct environmental audits, inspections, and compliance reviews across project sites
5. Lead environmental risk identification and mitigation throughout project lifecycles
6. Review and approve Environmental Management Plans (EMPs/ESMPs), method statements, and work package plans
7. Ensure all required permits, licences, and consents are maintained and adhered to
8. Support compliance with CDM Regulations and Principal Contractor responsibilities
9. Investigate environmental incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, implementing corrective actions where required
10. Monitor and report on environmental KPIs including carbon, waste, water, and biodiversity metrics
11. Promote biodiversity net gain (BNG), sustainable construction practices, and resource efficiency
12. Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks, and awareness sessions
13. Support and contribute to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and integrated management processes
14. Liaise with clients, regulators, subcontractors, and external stakeholders on environmental matters
15. Support continual improvement initiatives across environmental performance and compliance
The Successful Candidate:
Essential:
16. Degree qualified in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
17. Previous experience within environmental management in construction, infrastructure, rail, or a related sector
18. Strong working knowledge of UK environmental legislation and compliance requirements
19. Experience conducting environmental audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring
20. Proven ability to develop and implement Environmental Management Plans (EMPs/ESMPs)
21. Experience working within ISO 14001 certified management systems
22. Certified Internal Environmental Auditor (ISO 14001 or equivalent)
23. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
24. Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities
25. Confident supporting operational teams within a fast-paced project environment
26. Proactive, solutions-focused, and passionate about sustainability and environmental improvement
Desirable:
27. Experience within the rail or infrastructure sector
28. Knowledge of RISQS standards and rail assurance processes
29. PTS certification or willingness to obtain
30. Membership of a professional environmental body
31. Understanding of CDM Regulations and environmental integration
32. Experience supporting carbon reduction, sustainability reporting, and Net Zero initiatives
33. Knowledge of biodiversity net gain (BNG) and sustainable resource management
34. Previous experience mentoring or supporting junior team members
