The Wrekin Old Hall Trust Ltd is seeking a full-time, all year round Management Accountant to join their finance team.
The Management Accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial reporting for The Wrekin Old Hall Trust, ensuring robust financial controls, accurate and timely reporting, and compliance with regulatory and tax requirements. The role plays a key part in supporting strategic decision‑making and maintaining financial integrity, with specific responsibility for VAT compliance, including partial exemption calculations relevant to the independent school sector.
Key Responsibilities
* Preparation of termly management accounts, including variance analysis and commentary and Balance sheet reconciliation
* Compile the Board reports for the Bursar, and reports for senior leadership and governors.
* Ensure timely, accurate, and insightful financial reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
Budgeting and Forecasting
* Prepare the annual budgets and multi‑year financial forecasts.
* Work closely with budget holders across academic and support departments to monitor performance.
* Provide robust financial analysis and insights to inform strategic planning and decision‑making.
Compliance, VAT & Controls
* Ensure compliance with charity and independent school regulatory requirements.
* Prepare and submit VAT returns in line with HMRC requirements.
* Perform and maintain partial exemption calculations, including annual adjustments, ensuring appropriate recovery of input VAT.
* Advise on VAT treatment of income streams (e.g. fees, lettings, trading activities).
* Maintain strong internal controls and risk management frameworks.
* Lead audit preparation and act as the main point of contact for external auditors.
Systems & Process Improvement
* Act as a superuser for the finance system ensuring optimal use and configuration.
* Lead initiatives to streamline financial processes, improve reporting capability, and enhance efficiency.
Personal Specification
* Proven experience in financial management and preparation of management accounts.
* Strong understanding of VAT, including experience with partial exemption.
* Experience of preparing and submitting VAT returns.
* Strong financial systems and reporting skills.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
* Experience of leading or supervising a finance team.
* Knowledge of charity accounting and relevant regulations.
* Experience within the independent school or charity sector.
* Familiarity with IQ and IFinance
