Overview

Consultant in Anaesthetics, Darlington Memorial Hospital. 2 Posts are available - Consultant Anaesthetist based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. A fantastic opportunity to continue your career in Anaesthesia. This position is based at DMH with potential work at other Trust sites as required.


Responsibilities

* Provide Consultant-led anaesthetic care for patients in elective and emergency settings.
* On-call commitment is 1:12 and is solely for theatres and obstetrics. On call for Intensive Care is provided by a separate Consultant Anaesthetist, with good communication and teamwork between resident and non-resident staff. Weekend on-calls are usually 24 hours with support from juniors in a 3-tier rota.
* Undertake clinical work in conjunction with colleagues to maintain and develop anaesthetic services and to develop specialist skills in accordance with departmental needs.
* Responsible for the care of patients in their charge, participate in departmental administration, supervise junior medical staff, and ensure continuity of patient care.
* Contribute to teaching and participate in research, clinical audit, and governance activities as part of normal duties.
* Be willing to undertake elective sessions across sites, possess a UK driving licence, and present for scheduled list start times as required by the Trust.
* Deputise in the absence of colleagues and undertake additional duties as required for continuity of patient care.
* Participate in the weekly DMH-based FRCA teaching programme and support trainees and pre-FRCA doctors.


Job Plan and Duties

The Anaesthetic Department includes anaesthetics, ITU, theatres, chronic and acute pain, pre-assessment and day surgery, with involvement across surgical specialties. The post holder will work primarily at DMH and Bishop Auckland Hospital, with possible duties at other Trust sites. There are 11 operating theatres at DMH covering multiple specialties, with an ICU/HDU adjacent to the theatre complex. The job plan includes scheduled anaesthetic sessions on a 4-week rolling basis, with SPA time scheduled and potential adjustment of DCC:SPA ratios as service needs evolve. Each theatre session is 5.25 hours; remuneration is 1.3125 PAs per session (including pre- and post-op care). Direct Clinical Care and SPA allocations for a 10 PA contract are 8.56 PA and 1.5 PA respectively.


Proposed Timetable and Job Plan

This is indicative and will be finalized in partnership with the Clinical Director prior to appointment. A formal job plan will be agreed within 3–6 months and reviewed annually. The timetable includes rotating lists across Trauma, General, Gynae, ENT, etc., with expectations for standard operating times and on-call requirements.


Person Specification

Essential:

* Full registration with the GMC
* Specialist Registration with the GMC in Anaesthesia
* Evidence of attainment of or within 6 months of CCT
* Adherence to GMC appraisal and revalidation processes
* Licence to practise with the GMC, on or within 6 months of entry onto the Specialist Register on the date of interview

Desirable:

* Specialist registration with the RCOA

Qualifications

* Essential: MBBS, MBChB or equivalent; Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent
* Desirable: ALS, ATLS, APLS/EPLS or other related qualifications

Experience

* Essential: Experience in providing anaesthetic care for the specialties covered by the Trust; experience in acute pain interventions; substantial audit experience with knowledge of clinical governance
* Desirable: Experience with team databases and scoring systems; demonstrated impact of clinical audit; publications and academic awards

Special Skills & Knowledge

* Clinical skills appropriate for a Consultant in Anaesthesia
* Ability to train in theatre, bedside, and classroom settings; experience supervising trainees
* Ability to organise and prioritise own work and delegate to trainees/non-consultant anaesthetists
* Understanding of the importance of research
