A Little More About Your Role
WSP has a new opportunity for a Principal to Technical Director Level Geochemist / Hydrogeochemist to join our UK & Ireland Mine Water Team on a full-time basis based in the UK or Ireland.
We are looking for an experienced consultant to provide consulting services and deliver geochemical and the geochemical component of multi-disciplinary studies to our clients. This position focuses on the geochemical characterisation and assessment of water-rock interactions for the prediction, prevention, and management of metal leaching and acid rock drainage in mining projects. You will work on a range of local and international projects, applying your geochemical expertise across sectors. The ideal candidate will have consultancy experience and a successful client management record, preferably in mining.
Key Duties And Responsibilities
* Project coordination and client liaison on a national and international basis
* Oversight, mentoring, and review of mine water and geochemical studies
* Collaborating with international teams on permitting, baseline studies, feasibility, operational support, and reclamation in mining and other industries
* Understanding regulations and best practices in the UK/Ireland and internationally
* Designing geochemical characterisation plans aligned with regulatory and client needs
* Managing geochemical and water quality datasets, including QA/QC
* Interpreting and reporting laboratory and field test results for environmental media
* Performing impact and risk assessments with surface and groundwater professionals
* Preparing and delivering technical reports and presentations
* Travel for site work in the UK/Ireland and overseas, as needed
* Supporting business development, proposals, marketing, and conference participation
* Contributing to team strategy and business objectives
* Managing projects and understanding business systems
* Promoting health and safety standards in all activities
Qualifications and Experience
* Advanced degree (MSc or Ph.D) in geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, geology, or environmental chemistry
* Knowledge of geochemical and mass transport modelling codes (PHREEQC, MIN3P, Geochemist’s Workbench) is advantageous
* Experience with GoldSim water quality modelling is beneficial
* Proven experience in developing and leading geochemical studies in mining across various commodities and regions
* Ability to analyze large datasets, perform quality control, and interpret data
* Passion for innovation, self-education, and problem-solving
* Strong technical writing skills and proficiency in English; second language (French or Spanish) valued
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively
* Professional registration or progress towards it; commitment to CPD
* Understanding of health and safety culture in workplace and field environments
