Job Description:
Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds. This might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for safe and competent work on the network.
If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that joined the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.
About the role (External)
Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and operatives.
Technicians specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you’ll become a specialist in:
Track: Responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way). This includes working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, often involving manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
You’ll be a natural team player, able to lead when asked. You’ll deliver work safely, ensure team competencies meet safety standards, and be a role model for safe behaviors, confidently challenging risks to ensure everyone's safety.
You matter to us
Today's technicians can become tomorrow’s team leaders. We value your commitment to self-development and will provide training to develop your technical and non-technical skills. If transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding rail career.
While rail experience isn’t mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:
* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques in your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping up with standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn: Continuously develop relevant skills and stay updated.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.
Additional information
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
* Pre-employment checks: Drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Valid category B driving license required.
* Commute: Within 60 minutes of the location.
