Role Overview
The Site Inspector will form part of the Designer's Site Representative team, providing independent inspection and monitoring services during the construction phase of a highways civil engineering project.
The role is strictly assurance-based, providing independent reporting to the Client and Design Team on construction quality, compliance, and technical acceptability. The Site Inspector does not instruct or direct the Contractor's works.
Qualifications & Experience
The successful candidate will have experience as a Site Inspector, Clerk of Works, or similar assurance role within highways or civil engineering infrastructure projects.
Key requirements:
* Strong knowledge of highways civil engineering works, including:
o Pavements and surfacing
o Drainage and earthworks
o Kerbing, footways, and cycle infrastructure
o Structures interfaces
o Utilities and service diversions
* Experience reviewing works for compliance with design drawings, specifications, and standards
* Familiarity with contractor Quality Management Systems, including Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and material certification
* Ability to identify, record, and report defects, non-conformances, and design departures
* Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience producing clear site inspection reports
* Relevant qualification in civil engineering (HNC, HND, Degree) or equivalent site experience
Key Responsibilities
* Promote high standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance on site
* Undertake regular site inspections against approved design drawings, specifications, and standards
* Verify works are being constructed in line with design intent, identifying defects or discrepancies
* Review contractor documentation including:
o Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
o Method Statements (for compliance review)
o Material approvals and certification
* Record and report non-compliances, defects, and departures from design requirements
* Liaise with the design team to report site issues and support technical queries
* Monitor implementation of approved design changes and confirm corrective works align with revised information
* Maintain accurate site records including inspection notes, photographs, and non-conformance logs
* Support completion activities including snagging, as-built verification, and handover reviews
