Consultant in Medicine for Older Adults with a focus on acute frailty
This post offers the opportunity for a committed and ambitious clinician to join the NHS Lanarkshire Medicine for Older Adults department based at University Hospital Wishaw. The candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of Medicine for Older Adults care, especially with a focus on acute frailty. We are also keen for the successful candidate to develop any subspecialty interest they may have.
Acute Medicine for Older Adult services are provided on all three acute Lanarkshire hospital sites. These include acute frailty assessment and rehabilitation, as well as Hospital at Home service. University Hospital Wishaw is the trauma centre for NHS Lanarkshire, so the majority of the orthogeriatrics service is based within UHW. There is also an acute stroke ward located within the department which delivers acute stroke care and rehabilitation.
Subspecialty work within the department includes movement‑disorder service and falls clinics. There are also interim care beds affiliated to the department that provide slow‑stream rehabilitation, intermediate care and hospital‑based complex clinical care.
The department is about to establish an acute frailty unit and is an exciting time to join as it works with the NHS Lanarkshire Frailty network to improve and deliver frailty services fit for the 21st century.
Centralisation of trauma services occurred five years ago and a review of the trauma service is also underway to ensure that the service remains in line with Scottish Hip Fracture Audit targets while recognising the increase in silver trauma and plans for this.
Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the one PA for Non‑DCC/SPA activities, the Board supports applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well‑developed ideas for improving services who demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), medical education, research and development, acting as an appraiser, etc. Applicants who wish to commence on more than one PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager.
Applicants wishing to work less than full time or job share are also encouraged to apply.
Informal enquiries regarding this post will be welcomed by Dr Helen Morgan, Clinical Lead for Medicine for Older Adults, University Hospital Wishaw, 01698 366097; Dr Ben Adler, Clinical Director for Medicine and MOA, University Hospital Wishaw, 01698 366097; or Dr Alison Falconer, Deputy Chief of Medical Service, University Hospital Wishaw, 01698 3665572.
