Fairport Tunnelling Technologies (FTT) became a newly established division of Fairport Engineering Limited in 2021. Fairport Engineering Limited has now been acquired by pxGroup, and as a result, FTT has become pxFairport.
We are an engineering and projects delivery business specializing in the design, installation, management, and consultancy of bulk material handling systems across various sectors, with specific expertise in tunneling, aggregates, and ports. With extensive industry experience, our recent projects include successful deliveries in the UK, Europe, and Asian markets.
The Opportunity
The Lead Design Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering, project management, and procurement teams to ensure products meet customer needs while focusing on safety, quality, cost, and on-time delivery.
A major element of the role involves managing large composite models, equipment interfaces, top-level assemblies, and driving standardization across projects.

Key Responsibilities
* Utilize CAD software (AutoCAD, Solid Edge, Inventor, Tekla) to create drawings and schematics.
* Produce site layouts and schemes for projects, shared with clients and reviewed regularly.
* Develop drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, and specifications.
* Document design updates and record changes per pxFairport’s procedures.
* Promote standard design practices aiming for 80% reuse and 20% new designs.
* Support project engineers as needed.
* Lead client-facing activities, design, and specification generation for minor studies.
* Guide designers and detailers to ensure best practices.
* Coordinate and validate work by the design team and third-party designers.
* Lead cost reduction and value engineering initiatives.
* Check interfaces between mechanical and structural models.
* Participate in design reviews and follow-up actions.
* Ensure compliance with industry standards (BS, ISO).
* Support KPIs related to performance, delivery, accuracy, standardization, and recovery rate.
* Mentor junior staff members.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
* HNC in mechanical engineering with recognized apprenticeship.
* Experience in bulk material handling design roles.
* Understanding of heavy engineering, bespoke solutions, and process plant design.
* Experience in value engineering and continuous improvement.
* Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Solid Edge, Inventor, Tekla).
* Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D.
