Job Description

Mechanical Construction SME - Bridgwater, UK

About the Role

Are you a mechanical, materials, or nuclear engineer with experience in construction and pressure equipment installation? Are you confident in providing technical leadership and guidance on fabrication challenges across multidisciplinary teams? Are you proactive in identifying and driving innovation within fabrication processes to improve efficiency and quality? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join us as our next Mechanical Construction SME at Hinkley Point C!

The Opportunity

As a Mechanical Construction SME at HPC, you will be a key technical authority, providing expertise in mechanical component assembly and installation. Your role will support the successful construction, installation, and compliance of equipment and pressure systems on-site, focusing on stainless steel surface integrity, pressure testing, and mechanical code compliance (RCC-M). You will help maintain the highest technical standards across HPC.

Collaboration is central to your work, building strong connections with engineering teams at HPC and design teams in the UK and France. Your insights will ensure alignment between design, fabrication, and on-site assembly, adhering to project requirements and industry best practices.

Beyond technical expertise, you will ensure compliance in fabrication and installation activities by reviewing procedures, method statements, and technical documentation. You will also support and oversee your team, reinforcing best practices and upholding HPC’s construction standards.

Pay, Benefits, and Culture

Alongside a salary of £76,000 depending on experience, we offer flexible benefits supporting your wellbeing, including a pension scheme, bonus plan, health cover, electric vehicle leasing, mental health support, and employee discounts.

We embrace flexibility, supporting different working arrangements—office, site, or remote—to foster collaboration and comfort. Our priority is your safety, value, and inclusion.

We are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, aiming for a workforce that reflects a broad range of backgrounds. We support reasonable adjustments for applicants and foster a dynamic, inclusive environment where diverse perspectives drive innovation.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Fabrication SME, you will oversee nuclear governance, approve technical guidance on construction changes, and interpret codes to ensure proper implementation. You will appoint technical leads, review documentation, and contribute to developing strategies and surveillance programs for welding and related activities.

Your responsibilities include reviewing surveillance outcomes, identifying trends, managing NCRs, advising on RFIs, and assessing FCRs to maintain compliance and quality. You will participate in workshops, meetings, and steering committees, providing balanced, risk-based advice focused on nuclear safety, supporting the Construction Technical Manager, and collaborating with project teams and contractors to ensure safe, high-quality, timely delivery.

You will also foster innovation, engage with the supply chain, mentor team members, and manage performance reviews, resource planning, recruitment, and budgets to develop a capable team.

Who You Are

You possess a deep understanding of British and European standards, especially RCC-M, with experience in safety-critical construction documentation. A degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, or Metallurgy, along with extensive hands-on experience in joining and testing pressure equipment and pipework, is essential.

You have strong decision-making skills, a solid grasp of QA in regulated environments, and excellent communication and organizational skills. Experience in industries like nuclear, aerospace, or petrochemical, with expertise in welding codes and standards, is highly valued.

Applications close on Wednesday, 28th May, with interviews shortly after. Join us and help Britain achieve Net Zero.
