Named Nurse For safeguarding Children

The closing date is 02 April 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Safeguarding team as a Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children within the Trust.

The post holder will lead the Safeguarding Children’s work streams within the Trust and facilitate and develop multi-professional/interagency working and training in respect of Safeguarding Children.

The post holder will work with the wider safeguarding team and be responsible for the line management of the Safeguarding Practitioners for Children. As the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children you will ensure that there are robust internal policies and guidance in place, and will act as a focal point for the dissemination of information in relation to policy, procedures and training. The Named Nurse for Children will develop professional safeguarding standards and promote best practice. They will be accessible and visible across Trust areas and support colleagues with accurate and relevant information to enhance safeguarding knowledge and support risk escalation.


Main duties of the job

* To lead on Safeguarding Children workstreams and develop safe pathways alongside the partnership.
* To develop, maintain and evaluate a training programme.
* To support colleagues managing complex safeguarding situations to enhance their development, competence and confidence in the management of Safeguarding children cases.
* To access legal advice when appropriate and ensure all case escalation are shared and discussed with the Deputy Head or Head of Safeguarding.
* Undertake regular audit activity.
* Maintain current databases, ensuring responses to any emerging themes are identified and actions are taken.
* Participate in committees, forums and meetings as identified by the Deputy Head or Head of Safeguarding.

Person Specification


Personal Attributes and Skills

* Advanced communication skills with colleagues, patients and other agencies using a range of methods of communication
* Be able to effectively communicate in situations of emotional distress
* Team Player - demonstrates clear commitment to the team approach, exchanging ideas and providing support to colleagues.
* Ability to work under pressure and with a high level of interruption and changing priorities
* Excellent time management skills and be able to demonstrate the ability to work to timescales and complete requested tasks
* Have emotional resilience to manage potentially highly complex and contentious situations
* Act as a role model and change agent in safeguarding practices.
* Be able to work without direct supervision
* Be flexible to the needs of the service
* Ability to analyse, synthesise and present safeguarding children and team information to a variety of audiences as required by Deputy/ Head of Safeguarding
* Demonstrated ability to problem solve safeguarding issues in a calm, supportive and constructive manner.


Knowledge and Experience

* Have a minimum of three years' experience in a role related to delivering care for babies/children and young people and be currently practicing in the field of safeguarding children
* Experience of managing work with individual families and other agencies as a key part of the role
* Extensive child safeguarding experience within the acute setting/working collaboratively across organisational boundaries. Experience of dealing with traumatic and emotional events relating to safeguarding
* Experience of receiving and providing safeguarding supervision
* Experience in delivering training
* Proficient use of IT systems e.g. Word, PowerPoint, email, Excel spreadsheets
* Understanding of political influences on health care
* Knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical effectiveness in safeguarding children
* Ability to formulate and implement safeguarding policy
* Experience of working in an integrated safeguarding team (children and adults)
* Prior experience working as a Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children or extensive experience as safeguarding children’s specialist role
* Understanding of clinical governance and developing audit system


Qualifications and Training

* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration appropriate to the job role
* Evidence of additional specialist training in safeguarding
* Evidence of professional development relevant to safeguarding children
* Master level attainment, or willingness to work towards.
