Job Overview
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist (General Duties) to join its tertiary and quaternary‑level care team. The role involves delivering anaesthetic and perioperative services across a wide range of specialties including general surgery, trauma, plastics, ENT, maxillofacial, interventional radiology, urology, gynaecology, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, hepatobiliary surgery and Europe’s largest solid‑organ transplant programme. The position comprises 10 programmed activities (PAs) with flexibility for uncovered lists and consultant leave cover.
Responsibilities
* Deliver anaesthetic and perioperative care across listed specialties.
* Perform the 10 programmed activities and cover additional lists and consultant leave as required.
* Join the General On‑call rota, covering emergency theatres and the out‑of‑hours thrombectomy service (current frequency 1 in 10).
* Teach and train junior doctors and medical students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
* Engage in clinical audits, departmental and specialty reviews, and ongoing service development.
* Collaborate on research initiatives and support organisational change initiatives.
Qualifications & Requirements
* Consultant Anaesthetist with general duties designation.
* Experience with a broad range of surgical specialties, including trauma, plastics, ENT, maxillofacial, interventional radiology, urology, gynaecology, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, hepatobiliary surgery and solid‑organ transplant programmes.
* Proficiency in pre‑operative care, regional anaesthesia, and enhanced postoperative care units.
* Strong teaching, audit, and research skills.
