Day to Day role responsibilities
:
A part-time café chef is
responsible for preparing and cooking the menu's food offerings while maintaining high standards of food safety and quality, often in a fast-paced environment.
Their role requires a blend of culinary skill, organisational ability, and effective communication to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
Core responsibilities:
* Food preparation and cooking: Preparing, cooking, and plating menu items to a high standard, which includes freshly made salads, sandwiches, soups, baked goods, and breakfast dishes.
* Kitchen management: Managing the kitchen station, including setting up and closing down, restocking the line, and ensuring a clean, tidy, and compliant workspace. This also involves monitoring inventory and assisting with ordering supplies.
* Quality control: Overseeing all aspects of food preparation to ensure consistency in taste, portion size, and presentation.
* Hygiene and safety: Adhering to all food safety and sanitation regulations and maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment.
* Menu development: contributing to or developing new menu items, daily specials, or seasonal dishes.
* Events: preparing and serving food for day-time and evening events when the café is closed for events including canapes, breakfasts, lunches, 3 course dinners.
* Collaboration: Working closely with other kitchen staff and front-of-house teams to ensure smooth service and communication.
Key Skill & Qualifications:
* Passion and love for food: Desire to develop food knowledge and bring fresh ideas to the kitchen.
* Proven cooking experience: Relevant experience in a commercial kitchen, such as a café, restaurant, or catering service.
* Culinary aptitude and strong food knowledge: Solid knife skills and familiarity with cooking techniques, flavour profiles, and seasoning.
* Food safety certification: Knowledge of and commitment to food safety and sanitation practices, including food hygiene certification.
* Organisational and time-management skills: The ability to prioritise tasks, manage prep work, and execute dishes efficiently.
* Ability to work under pressure: A calm and steady demeanor during busy, high-pressure periods.
* Teamwork and communication: The ability to communicate clearly and work cooperatively with a small team.
* Creativity: An imaginative approach to food presentation and, for some roles, recipe development.
