Palliative Care Consultant

This part‑time, 12‑month fixed‑term Consultant in Palliative Medicine post has been established to provide maternity leave cover from September 2026. The role is split between hospital and community settings, with the postholder providing care across both environments. The postholder will also be expected to provide senior cross‑cover for the Ashgate Hospice inpatient unit during periods of sickness, annual leave, or other planned and unplanned absences to support service resilience and continuity of care.
Responsibilities
Provide senior clinical care in hospital and community settings, and cross‑cover Ashgate Hospice inpatient unit during absences.
Qualifications
* MRCP/FRCP (UK) or equivalent medical qualification.
* Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of interview.
* Specialist interest or additional qualifications in other areas of specialty.
* Full participation in CME.
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register in Palliative Medicine or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
Experience
* Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team and specialist palliative care unit.
* Ability to undertake palliative care assessments in a variety of settings including hospital wards, outpatient clinics, palliative care inpatient unit, and patients’ homes.
* Ability to provide palliative care advice and support to other healthcare professionals in the palliative care team, hospital and community settings.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Experience of participation in CPD.
* Clinical supervision experience/skills.
* Previous experience of using online patient record system e.g., SystmOne.
* Ability to undertake training/mentoring of clinical staff and enthusiasm for education.
