Job Description
Are you an aspiring educational psychologist, child counsellor, or psychology graduate seeking hands-on experience working with children and young people with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs in the education sector? If so, this opportunity may be the perfect fit for you.
New Directions Liverpool is currently recruiting trainee teaching assistants with a background in psychology to work within the special educational needs (SEN) sector. This role offers a valuable opportunity to apply your psychological knowledge and skills in a practical educational setting, where you will provide vital support to children with a range of SEMH challenges.
Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
* Having excellent communication skills.
* Building strong relationships with students and staff.
* Being encouraging and supportive.
* Having a positive attitude towards teaching and aiding children's development.
* Ensuring the safety and well-being of the students.
Although the role is based around education support, due to the children’s personal needs and behaviors, they require consistent mentoring, motivating, advising, and some counselling so their well-being can remain stable, allowing them to achieve more in their education and work towards a more independent future.
Behaviors displayed by the children can be challenging, so applicants must be prepared to practice de-escalation and calming techniques, as well as maintain an empathetic approach and understand that behaviors stem from other problems. Candidates from care, sports, psychology, criminology, sociology, and youth work backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
