* To conduct research within the field of suicide and self-harm prevention and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
* To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
* To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
* To undertake administrative tasks associated with the National Centre for Suicide and Self-harm Prevention research programme, including the planning and organisation of Centre activities and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or equivalent or relevant practice or policy experience
* An established expertise and proven portfolio of social science research and/or relevant policy/practice experience in one or more field with strong relevance to suicide and self-harm prevention. The post's methodological focus is likely to include systematic reviews, intervention development and evaluation and/or qualitative research on lived experience. It will have a particular focus on suicide and self-harm research with adult social care populations, so expertise in these would be especially relevant.
* Knowledge of current status of research in one or more of: suicide and self-harm prevention, systematic reviews; intervention development and evaluation; qualitative research on lived experience; adult social care; public health.
* Proven ability to publish in national/international journals / national/international conferences and/or other research outputs
* Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies
* Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
* Proven ability to engage with public, practice and policy stakeholders to develop research priorities and disseminate research findings.
* Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals
* Proven ability to work without close supervision.

* Relevant professional qualification in health care, public health or social care
* Evidence of collaborations with services relevant to suicide and self-harm prevention.

The Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE)
The Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE), funded by Health and Care Research Wales, is a recently established research centre formed in partnership with the Centre for Trials Research. It brings together multi-disciplinary expertise from across the university, and fosters collaboration with experts elsewhere in the UK, external organisations and community groups, to develop cutting-edge research on adult social care, underpinned by substantial UK-level research funding.
CARE aims to build on an existing track record of research on adult social care and the health-social care interface, from across Cardiff University. To ensure its work is relevant to the social care sector, CARE has a strategic advisory group of senior leaders and policy makers, and also has set up advisory panels of practitioners and people with lived experience of receiving social care services. The development of CARE is supported by the Children's Social Care Research and Development Centre (CASCADE), Exchange, and the Cardiff University schools of Social Sciences, Business, Healthcare Sciences, Law, Medicine, and Psychology. CARE also works with other research centres and groups across Cardiff University, and beyond.
Centre for Development, Evaluation, Complexity and Implementation in Public Health Improvement (DECIPHer)
The DECIPHer Centre was established via UKCRC funding as one of 5 Public Health Research Centre of Excellence in 2009 – 2019, in partnership with the University of Bristol and Swansea University. In 2020, it became a Health and Care Research Wales funded public health research centre of excellence, in partnership with Public Health Wales, with funding to 2025. DECIPHer has now received sustainability funding from Health and Care Research Wales to continue its work from
DECIPHer plays a significant role in a series of major National Institute for Health Research funded investments, as well as the Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health and the ESRC funded leadership hub Behavioural Research-UK. Within its next 5 years, it will also partner with newly funded Health and Care Research Wales funded centres, including the National Centre for Suicide and Self-harm Prevention Research and the Wales Applied Virology Unit. It also hosts the School Health Research Network, and an internationally recognised programme of research-led teaching in methodology for the development and evaluation of interventions. Our research from 2025 will aim to improve the health of the public, reduce inequalities, and drive methodological innovation in the development and evaluation of health improvement interventions.
The Research Centres offices are located in the university's new sbarc | spark building. Sbarc | spark is the first social science research park in the world. Part of the university's £300m Innovation Campus, this purpose-built facility co-locates world-leading social science researchers with organisations and representatives from the public, third and private sectors - some of which are focused on social care - all working together to address the major complex challenges facing societies.
