Healthcare Support Worker – Band 2 to 3 development role
Salary: £25,272
Work Location: St Mary’s Hospital (Isle of Wight) – Parkhurst Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 5TG.
Hours per week: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (will consider part time, minimum 22.5). Contract Type: Permanent.
We are looking for a motivated, patient‑focused Healthcare Support Worker to join our dynamic team. This role offers growth, challenge, and the opportunity to make a real impact.
We offer you the chance to develop from a Band 2 to a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker at six months into the organisation, supported by a full‑time two‑week induction leading to the Care Certificate.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist the team with the provision of clinical care for a defined group of patients under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals and safeguard the welfare, safety and security of patients, visitors and staff.
* Support patients with personal care, including maintaining hygiene, working with bodily fluids and waste.
* Provide physical comfort for patients while ensuring privacy and dignity.
* Wash and dress patients and help them move around safely.
* Serve meals and support patients with eating and drinking.
* Maintain a clean and comfortable environment, make beds and support infection control measures.
* Observe and monitor patient condition and report any changes to senior staff.
* Record information in patient administration systems and assist with other administrative duties.

Qualifications (Essential)
* English and Maths qualification at GCSE or Functional Skills level 1 (or an internationally recognised equivalent).
* Completed Care Certificate or ability to complete within three months of appointment (pro rata for part‑time employee).
* Complete Knowledge and Behaviour Framework within six months of appointment.
Qualifications (Desirable)
* Level 2 qualification in a health‑related subject or equivalent gained through experience, on‑the‑job training, short courses and completion of work‑based competencies.
Experience (Desirable)
* Experience in an acute hospital setting, community setting or nursing home.
Skills and Knowledge (Essential)
* Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
* Understand and comply with HCSW mandatory induction and code of conduct.
* Completion and maintenance of statutory and mandatory learning activities.
* Ability to deal with a range of difficult situations.
* Awareness, understanding and compliance with policies and practices, e.g. Escort Policy, Infection Prevention and Control and Health and Safety.
* Ability to work within the scope of practice under direct and indirect supervision by a registered nurse.
* Demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department and ensure it is compatible and in good working order.
* Demonstrate core skills to undertake personal care for patients and related tasks and activities.
* Effective written and verbal communication, literacy and numeracy skills, including basic computer literacy, record keeping and time management.
* Teamwork, initiative, multitasking, adaptability, organisational skills and emotional intelligence.
* Good observation skills and recognition of the importance of reporting.
