Overview
We are looking for a Researcher (Economics) to join the research team in the Library of the House of Lords. This position supports the delivery of the Librarys services to Members and prepares briefings in all areas of policy. You would be the principal researcher for briefings concerning the economy and related issues such as business, financial regulation, tax policy, banking, international trade and statistics.
The research will be undertaken using a range of resources and by contacting government and external organisations, informed by your expert knowledge of the subject. Briefings are circulated to Members of the House of Lords and published on the Library website.
You would have the opportunity to work on a hybrid basis, with a mixture of working from home and working onsite at Parliament. Availability to work one evening per week when the House is sitting may be required as part of the Library’s evening service rota; this is currently completed from home, for which an annual allowance is payable. Arrangements would be discussed with the successful applicant.
This is an opportunity to write briefings used by Members of the House of Lords and to inform debates on the floor of the House. The Library offers a flexible and interesting working environment within Parliament, with the chance to research and write about a wide range of topics.
Youll Be Accountable For
* Dealing with enquiries from individual members in-person, by phone and by email.
* Conducting background research and producing written and oral responses to those enquiries.
* Writing briefing papers on bills and other topics of current parliamentary interest.
* Regular interactions with Members and providing a professional and well-informed customer service when on duty on the research desk in the Library.
* Forming good working relationships with members of the House who have a particular interest in economics.
What Were Looking For
* Economics knowledge.
* Ability to write briefings.
* Ability to research and summarise relevant information on various topics.
* A degree in economics or a related subject that demonstrates knowledge and understanding.
It would be even better if you had or if you’re willing to learn
* A relevant postgraduate degree.
* Practical experience of writing about economics or using economic sources in other roles.
* Understanding of Parliament and current affairs, particularly matters relating to the House of Lords.
