Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist - Urology

Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist - Urology, Band 6

The closing date is 27 January 2026

This post holder will work alongside the team to deliver highly specialist and personalised care to both cancer and benign urology patients.

The post holder will be help to deliver a range of nurse led clinics.

The post holder will be a point of contact for patients.

The post holder will assist in the delivery of complex treatments under the supervision of the senior team.


Main duties of the job

To work clinically as an Associate Specialist Nurse in Urology, delivering and maintaining high standards of care to patient with benign and malignant urology disease.

To work with and support the Band 7 Urology CNS and the Band 8a Urology Nurse Practitioner contributing to the development and promotion of the nursing service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care.

To educate staff in understanding the care requirements of patients undergoing investigations and treatments and ensure that the physical and psychological needs of the patients and their families are met.

To provide holistic care for patient's undergoing investigation and treatment on their entire patient pathway, undertaking Holistic Needs Assessments on all cancer patients.

Ensure efficient pathway management according to the relevant 18 week and cancer targets, ordering tests, screening referrals and arranging treatments to facilitate this.

To promote and maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team, patient and carers.

To undertake Trial without catheter, bladder instillations, intra-vesical chemotherapy in the clinic setting and ward setting if required offering continence advice as required.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

* Co-ordinating the care of patients diagnosed with urological cancer to ensure prompt treatment in line with national access standards of 18 weeks and cancer targets.
* Participating in the weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and working with the urology team to help co-ordinate the patients' pathway, informing the patients' GPs of decisions made and informing patient when a cancer diagnosis has been ruled out.
* Undertake screening of referrals to ensure efficient use of clinic time and minimisation of wasted clinic slots.
* Undertaking intra-vesical chemotherapy and immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancers and then arranging appropriate follow up according to evidence based protocols.
* Undertake bladder instillations for benign disease, trial without catheters and complex catheter changes.
* After appropriate training, requesting diagnostic investigations like blood tests and endoscopic examinations.
* Prepare patients for procedures over the telephone, ensuring they are suitably prepared for out-patient procedures.
* Offer advice on the wards in relation to urology nursing care/continence issues.

Leadership/Networking

* Providing assistance to all staff to enhance patient care.
* Engaging in effective communication, involving all members of the multidisciplinary team.
* Fostering the continued development of the urology service within the Trust.
* Working across care settings to achieve optimum continuity of care of patients with catheters and urological disease providing advice to ward staff and community staff.
* Acting as an effective role model.
* Involvement with urology nurses within the Royal Marsden Partners to share learning and identify best practice.
* To be familiar with national, professional and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. Clinical Governance, National Peer Review.

Service Development

* Keeping own knowledge up to date and taking personal responsibility for self- development and personal growth.
* Identify own personal development needs as part of annual appraisal process.
* Establish and maintain personal clinical supervision and mentoring.
* Make recommendations about how to further improve the service.

Professional

* The post holder is expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner according to the NMC Code of Conduct and in accordance with vision and values espoused by the Trust.
* The post holder will adhere to and promote Trust and Departmental Policies, Procedures and Guidelines related to both professional practice and general issues i.e. Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities etc.

Communication

* Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward.
* Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* Diploma/Degree in relevant area
* Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
* Advanced communication course


Experience

* Experience of undertaking Trial Without Catheter
* Able to demonstrate effective consolidation of nursing knowledge & practice during working as a Band 6
* Understanding equality and diversity and how to apply to self and other.
* Knowledge of access standards relating to 18 weeks and cancer standards
* Knowledge of intravesical drug instillations


Skills and Knowledge

* Excellent interpersonal, both verbal and written
* Confident communicator over the telephone
* Ability priorities workload
* Knowledge of clinical governance & its application
* Ability to work autonomously & within teams
* IT literate in Microsoft office package
* Excellence problem solving skills
