We are seeking a qualified and compassionate Personal Tutor / Support Worker to provide tailored educational and personal support to a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and a Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) profile. The role requires delivering learning and developmental support in line with the child's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), using flexible, collaborative approaches that reduce anxiety and encourage engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Educational Support
* Plan and deliver structured learning activities aligned with EHCP outcomes and age related expectations.
* Use flexible, low-demand teaching approaches to reduce anxiety and resistance.
* Adapt lessons to the child's interests, strengths, and sensory needs.
* Monitor progress and provide clear feedback to parents/carers and professionals.
* Ensure the child attends extra-curricular, educational and therapeutic activities and provision.
Personal and Social Development
* Encourage positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction.
* Support participation in community, recreational, and enrichment activities.
* Promote independence in daily routines, self-care, and decision-making.
Safeguarding and Wellbeing
* Ensure the child's safety, dignity, and wellbeing at all times.
* Create a calm, supportive environment that reduces pressure and demand.
* Follow safeguarding policies and report concerns promptly.
EHCP Compliance
* Work in line with the child's EHCP outcomes and strategies.
* Liaise with parents, therapists, and health professionals to ensure consistency.
* Keep accurate records of interventions, progress, and challenges.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
* Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), PGCE, or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
* Experience supporting children with ASD, including PDA profiles.
* Understanding of PDA strategies: low-demand approaches, collaborative negotiation, and anxiety reduction.
* Familiarity with EHCP processes and ability to implement specified strategies.
* Strong communication skills with children, parents, and professionals.
* Patience, empathy, and resilience in managing challenging behaviours.
* Ability to adapt teaching methods flexibly to reduce anxiety and encourage engagement.
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection responsibilities.
* Full clean driving licence and suitable car and insurance for use during working hours.
* Comfortable around animals.
Desirable Criteria
* Additional SEN training or qualifications (e.g., PDA-specific CPD).
* Knowledge of autism-specific approaches such as TEACCH, PECS, social stories, or Zones of Regulation.
* Experience working in home-based or alternative education settings.
* First Aid and safeguarding training.
* Ability to integrate therapeutic input (e.g., speech and language, occupational therapy) into daily practice.
