Job overview

The Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service (SHYPS) is seeking a motivated Biomedical Scientist to work in the busy, friendly, Point of Care Testing (POCT) department at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Based primarily in Hull, your role will be to supervise the day to day running of the POCT department. You will be required to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of POCT equipment and oversee stock levels of reagents and consumables in all analytical areas. The post holder will be expected to work efficiently following departmental health and safety procedures and ensure that any problems are reported to the line manager. The post holder must ensure that personal proficiency and competencies are maintained and must be willing to take part in any training required to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of equipment and techniques. We are looking for an individual who is hard working, innovative, sociable, and works well as part of a busy team. Previous experience in POCT is desirable but not essential.

Main duties of the job

1. To follow departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety rules at all times.
2. To take part in any training necessary for an up-to-date knowledge of all equipment, techniques and maintenance required in areas in which they work.
3. To identify problems within the areas that they are working and report them to their manager.
4. To maintain clear and concise communication with users of the service at all times.
5. To ensure that all work is carried out in compliance with ISO standards.
6. To provide training to clinical staff as/when required.

Education, Qualifications

Essential criteria

14. BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science accredited by the IBMS or equivalent.
15. HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
16. IBMS Specialist Diploma in a Pathology discipline

Experience

Essential criteria

17. Has 3 years post registration experience working in an NHS clinical laboratory

Desirable criteria

18. Experience of working as a BMS in a POCT department.
