Science In Sport Group is a world leader in sports and performance nutrition. We operate two brands and maintain a 160,000 square‑foot manufacturing facility in Blackburn, Lancashire.
The Role
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the world‑class manufacturing facility by ensuring production runs as efficiently as possible, maintaining safety for the team, quality of our brands, continuous improvement, and tight labour control that results in quality customer service. You will work closely with Warehouse, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and Customer Experience to achieve shared targets and be willing to support other departments when needed.

* Hourly rate: £24.08 – £25.29 per hour
* Working Hours: Shift pattern – Days (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off) 40.5 hours per week

Your 4 Most Important Responsibilities
* Carry out preventative maintenance diligently, in line with advised timeframes and procedures. Use own expertise to highlight potential gaps in PM procedures.
* Timely response to equipment breakdowns with decisive, effective resolutions using root‑cause principles and engineering best practice.
* Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting and implementing changes to improve equipment performance, reliability, and safety.
* Strictly adhere to health, safety, food safety, and environmental policies in all activities.
Accountability – What You Are Responsible For Delivering
* Consistent use of computerised maintenance management system (CMMS), ensuring all necessary work detail is recorded with accurate work hours applied to each job.
* Personal responsibility for issuing spare parts for work completed, ensuring CMMS inventory is always up‑to‑date.
* Oversee contractors, ensuring compliance with work permits and site protocols.
* Support the development of production personnel in improving the efficiency of equipment setup and product changeovers.
* Adherence to purchasing protocols – POs raised & approved before committing to spend, GRPOs submitted on receipt of goods.
* Support production trials, providing engineering insights for process improvement.
* Maintain workshop and toolbox standards.
* Use eMaint CMMS to manage own workload and complete assigned work within agreed timeframes.
Capability – the skills and behaviours required to do this job well
* Proficiency in mechanical and electrical engineering principles, particularly in an FMCG food manufacturing setting.
* Able to identify root causes of equipment failure and develop creative solutions for reoccurring issues.
* Strong communication abilities, both verbal and written.
* Able to efficiently prioritise tasks based on urgency and importance.
* Capable of effective use of the CMMS for consistent, accurate recording of work‑related data.
* Meticulous attention to detail for ensuring quality and accuracy in all engineering activities.
* Proficiency in acquiring new skills and knowledge to support automation and process technologies.
Performance – how you will know you are doing a great job
* Performance will be discussed in 1‑2‑1’s with the Senior Engineering Lead, every six weeks.
* Weekly distribution of department KPI’s will provide a live view of current department position vs targets.
* Right First Time mindset – you are not asked to return to the same breakdown.
* No downtime, quality, or safety issues occur as a result of any work completed.
* Production operators express their confidence in your ability to support them with technical issues.
* Spare stock is maintained with no excess loss of time from lack of parts on‑hand.
* Robust corrective actions lead to more time spent on planned vs reactive works.
* Internal audits demonstrate department compliance with company health and safety, quality, and environmental policies.
Specific metrics will be set when in role and will be reviewed and built upon regularly. Alongside this, you will be supported with a personal performance plan that will enable you to continue improving your own performance and impact.
