Job Description:
Background
Carter Design Group is looking to recruit a Fire Engineer to join a team involved with projects at all stages. The team works on a variety of building and civil engineering projects from £0.1M to £30M+, including education, retail, commercial, industrial, offices, medical, research facilities, and residential developments.
You will provide design and coordination support, peer reviews, fire risk advice, and support site checking, verification, and validation.
Key Responsibilities
* Identify and mitigate fire-related risks in designs.
* Create designs, calculations, sketches, and diagrams to prevent fire spread, and produce fire strategy reports.
* Advise the design team on integrating fire safety into designs, including safe occupancy levels and evacuation plans.
* Review employer’s requirements for fire safety during preconstruction, including systems and risk assessments.
* Verify compliance of design outputs with legislation and standards.
* Recommend materials for fire safety in construction or refurbishment.
* Conduct site visits and technical inspections for fire safety compliance.
* Prepare reports with recommendations for remedial works.
* Coordinate with authorities and professionals to ensure regulatory compliance.
* Support post-project inspections and defect reporting.
* Stay updated with fire safety regulations.
* Possess fire modelling knowledge; full CFD modelling is not required but understanding calculation processes is essential.
* Mentor team members as needed.
* Lead by example in work ethic and professionalism.
* Engage actively in project reviews and team communication.
Key Skills & Knowledge
* Knowledge of fire safety guidance and codes such as BB100, BS 8629, BS 9990, BS 5839, PAS8671, BS 8579, Building Regulations Part B, BS9999.
* Understanding of fire engineering CFD and smoke modelling.
Experience
* Minimum 5 years UK experience across construction sectors.
* Degree or postgraduate qualification in fire engineering.
* Working towards or registered as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) with IFE or similar.
* Registered fire risk assessor.
