Job Description:
Why Arup?
The successful design, development, and maintenance of our water infrastructure require the integration of many disciplines. Arup’s water team has wide-ranging skills spanning advisory and technical services. We work on projects related to flood risk management, water resource planning, dam engineering, treatment works, and river engineering.
The main focus of Arup’s Water team in Sheffield is stormwater. We advise clients on flood risk at strategic and site levels, model water movement and flood risks, and design nature-based solutions to manage stormwater, providing wider environmental benefits. Our team has experienced strong growth, with increasing demand for practical, proven solutions.
Arup has a history of working with major UK water companies, local authorities, and the Environment Agency. We have secured significant frameworks with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Thames Water, and Severn Trent Water, and continue to bid for more.
The Opportunity
In Sheffield, Arup is leading efforts to retrofit blue-green infrastructure into urban landscapes to reduce flood risk and pollution. We are involved in projects like the Mansfield Sustainable Flood Resilience (MSFR), helping design urban flood schemes based on biodiversity interventions. These interventions act as sponges, freeing sewer capacity and offering environmental benefits. Our clients are eager to invest more in such infrastructure.
We seek a passionate professional to help deliver these projects. The ideal candidate values nature-based solutions, understands blue-green infrastructure, and is willing to promote these solutions to clients. Digital skills, such as GIS, FME, or Python, are advantageous. Experience in water sector design or delivery, from engineering, science, or related fields, is preferred. We value diverse backgrounds to foster innovative solutions.
Role Responsibilities
* Support business development, project management, and technical excellence.
* Prepare proposals, contribute to projects, and write technical reports.
* Engage with government, authorities, and clients, and present at conferences.
* Identify opportunities, link stakeholders, and promote blue-green infrastructure.
* Provide line management and development for junior team members.
* Participate in project meetings and monitor budgets for favorable outcomes.
Qualifications and Experience
* Knowledge of designing SuDS or nature-based solutions, retrofit or new build.
* Understanding of hydraulic and hydrological processes for stormwater management.
* Interest in digital technologies; GIS, FME, or Python skills are a plus.
* Experience in civil drainage design from concept to detailed stages.
* Experience in regulated industries like water or nuclear sectors.
