Reports to: Principal
Professional Duties of a Teacher
* Exercise of general professional duties
o If employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal.
o If employed by a board on terms under which you are not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which you may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
* Exercise of particular duties
o Perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal or the board, duties assigned from time to time.
* Planning
o Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
o Teaching pupils, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
o Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
* General
o Promote the general progress and well‑being of pupils.
o Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on further education and future careers, making relevant records and reports.
o Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
o Communicate and consult with parents.
o Communicate and cooperate with approved persons or bodies outside the school.
o Participate in meetings arranged for the above purposes.
* Assessment / Reporting
Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils and groups, except where it may compromise a teacher’s own position.
* Staff Development / Professional Development
o Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
o Review teaching methods and programmes.
o Participate in further training and professional development.
o Advise and cooperate with the principal and other teachers on preparation and development of courses, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline / Health and Safety
o Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, safeguarding health and safety on premises and during authorised activities elsewhere.
o Participate in curriculum, administration, and pastoral meetings.
* Public Examinations
Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils, assessing pupils, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising pupils during examinations.
* Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
o Contribute to selection, induction, and assessment of other teachers, including probationary teachers.
o Co‑ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
o Participate in administrative tasks related to the curriculum, organization, pastoral functions, and supervision of support staff.
o Attend assemblies and register attendance of pupils where required.
* Staff Cover
Supervise and teach pupils whose teacher is absent, subject to the conditions listed in the regulations for staff cover.
Hours of Work
A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, not more than 190 involving classroom teaching. A teacher shall be available for duties at such times and places as specified by the Principal or the Board, for 1,265 hours in any year, excluding preparation, marking, and travel. Restrictions on classroom teaching hours apply as specified. Breaks of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm for nursery schools) are required.
Qualifications & Professional Membership
* Teaching qualification recognised in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Level 6 qualification or equivalent for teaching English as main subject.
* Registration with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
* Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding, child protection, SEND Code of Practice, and a range of teaching strategies.
* Knowledge of digital classroom tools, mobile technologies and current assessment methods.
* Effective teaching and classroom management skills.
* Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive environment.
* Ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents, and community.
* Ability to work as part of a team and motivate self and others.
