Job Title: Building Technician Location: William Harvey Hospital, Ashford (primarily site-based, with regular travel to other sites within the organisation required as part of wider service delivery responsibilities). Salary: £14.93 per hour. Hours: Full-time, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Shift/On-Call: The post-holder will be required to participate in a shift pattern and an on-call rota to ensure the continuation of an essential 24/7 estates service. This is crucial to maintaining a safe and operational environment within a live clinical setting. The role centres on delivering high-quality service across all areas of building and fabric maintenance, statutory compliance tasks, and a wide variety of reactive works. The successful candidate will be someone who brings substantial, practical, hands-on experience in building fabric, supported by a formal qualification in a related discipline such as Carpentry or Joinery. The position requires someone able to work independently, making confident and informed technical decisions without supervision, often within time-critical or sensitive clinical environments. Duties span a wide range of repair, maintenance, refurbishment, and replacement activities, ranging from minor day-to-day tasks to more complex or larger-scale works involving multiple building components. Key Responsibilities The Building Technician's responsibilities are extensive and play a vital role in supporting the safe running of hospital services. Maintenance and Repairs Delivering all aspects of building and fabric maintenance, ensuring compliance with regulations and completing reactive works as required. Undertaking essential repair tasks and general maintenance activities as instructed by the Team Leader or Manager. Executing a broad range of site maintenance activities, which may include: Wall and floor tiling repairs or full tiling works. Roofing repairs across various roof types and structures. Tarmac repairs to hospital roads and pedestrian footpaths. Refurbishment and repair of all types of hospital furniture. Repairs and refurbishments to doors, windows, hinges, locks, and associated ironmongery. Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) inspections in line with 2Gether Support Solutions procedures and established maintenance schedules to ensure asset longevity and statutory compliance. Compliance and Safety Maintaining and repairing fire doors and fire safety systems in adherence with statutory requirements and HTM regulations. Working safely within hazardous or high-risk environments, taking all necessary precautions to prevent injury, minimise risk, and avoid damage to equipment or premises. Being fully aware of the clinical impact of works undertaken, particularly when operating within live patient areas, sensitive locations, and hygiene-critical zones. Operational and Communication Interpreting instructions, drawings, and technical specifications relevant to the trade and carrying out tasks without the need for direct supervision. Actively utilising the Technical Solutions CAFM system to record job details, update progress, close work orders, and document time spent alongside any required comments. Carrying 2Gether Support Solutions communication devices at all times to ensure readiness for urgent callouts or emergency situations. Providing support to the Building Team Leader when required, including deputising during periods of absence or increased workload. Essential Requirements for Success Qualifications & Experience Hold a recognised qualification in a building fabric discipline such as Carpentry or Joinery. Completion of a structured training programme within a building trade for a minimum of three years. Possess a full, valid driving licence and the ability to drive between various sites. Knowledge & Skills Demonstrate an advanced understanding of building fabric systems and associated trades. Knowledge across multiple technical disciplines, including: Woodworking machinery and rotating equipment. Complex drainage layouts and systems. Joinery principles and techniques. Vinyl flooring repairs and fitting. Various roof repair methods. Door and window furniture, along with basic locksmithing functions. Ability to identify hazards, work safely, and avoid danger within diverse working environments. Awareness of critical safety topics such as asbestos, legionella, and COSHH. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Personal attributes including adaptability, a proactive "can-do" attitude, and the ability to work effectively within a demand-driven service that requires pragmatic, solution-focused thinking.
