Depot Driver (Shunter)
Location: Southampton
Pay Rate: £23.66 per hour PAYE or £30.18 per hour Umbrella (rates include 30% shift allowance)
Contract Duration: 6 Months
Shift Pattern: This role will be nights only, Monday to Thursday shift only.
Key Responsibilities of a Depot Driver (shunter):
Safely move rolling stock within the depot, including positioning vehicles for maintenance, servicing, cleaning, or operational readiness.
Carry out shunting movements in accordance with depot rules, safe systems of work, and company procedures.
Operate vehicles and equipment competently and safely while maintaining effective communication with control teams, supervisors, and maintenance staff.
Prepare trains/units for movement, including brake tests, securing vehicles, coupling/uncoupling activities, and confirming readiness for transfer.
Ensure safe marshalling, stabling, and positioning of rolling stock to meet operational and maintenance requirements.
Liaise closely with depot control, production teams, and operational staff to support efficient depot throughput and delivery plans.
Conduct pre-movement safety checks and report defects, hazards, incidents, or unsafe conditions promptly.
Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, and compliance with depot procedures, including PPE requirements.
Support depot operational activities where required, including train preparation, or light maintenance tasks (where competent and authorised).
Accurately complete required documentation, movement logs, and shift handovers to ensure continuity of operations.
Contribute to a positive safety culture and demonstrate strong situational awareness when working around moving vehicles and plant.
Respond flexibly to operational priorities and changing depot requirements to support service delivery.
Typical expectations also include strong safety awareness, communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work shifts in a safety-critical environment.
All PPE provided by the client and Health and Safety explained before and on site.
