As a member of the Board, you can help the University engage with, reflect, and respond to the needs of our student, staff, and stakeholder communities. The University aims to have a social impact and acts as an economic engine and a force for social change in the county, region, and the UK. Our latest Economic Impact Report shows that for every £1 spent running the University, £4 is returned to the economy—a 300% return on investment. Board members provide oversight, strategic development, and serve as trustees of the University’s long-term future.
What are we looking for?
The essential skills include:
* Experience of achievement in a career or other relevant expertise to contribute to the Board
* Experience in creating and implementing strategy in complex, multi-stakeholder environments
* Knowledge of Northampton, Northamptonshire, or surrounding areas
* Skills in finance, IT, or community engagement
* Ability to work collaboratively, reach consensus, debate constructively, and accept collective responsibility
* Capacity to assimilate complex information and offer constructive challenge
* Demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, with the ability to challenge issues in these areas
* Excellent communication skills, including critical listening and articulate expression
* Availability to dedicate sufficient time to the role
* Willingness to represent the University positively to internal and external stakeholders
* Fulfills the criteria for independence
The desirable skills include experience in governance, operational management, risk management, performance monitoring, business development, marketing, public relations, human resources, law, or project management.
Responsibilities
Board members oversee University activities, ensure long-term sustainability, approve strategies, and safeguard reputation. You will work with a team of governors and staff, gaining professional experience and skills. Appointments consider the overall composition of the Board. This is a voluntary role with reasonable expenses reimbursed.
