Clinical Psychologist

We are looking for a clinical psychologist passionate about working with adults with learning disabilities to work alongside other qualified psychologists and assistant psychologists, within an experienced multi-disciplinary team. This post will be a clinical post working in the community directly with adults with learning disabilities, their families and carers. The role will involve working across clinical pathways of mental health and positive behavioural support and liaising with partner organisations. You will contribute to governance within the department, such as audits, and training that the department provides to colleagues. The post is a permanent Band 7 post.


Main duties of the job

This role will be in the community (either seeing clients at base, home visits or at other sites in the community) across the whole Newcastle patch. Key roles will include consultation, assessment formulation and intervention (both direct and in-direct), neuropsychological assessment, multi-disciplinary work, supervision and training and group work.

You will be part of a supportive and experienced team of clinicians, who work closely together. Your main responsibilities will be clinical, developing your therapeutic and neuropsychological skills in working with adults with a learning disability, and offering consultation, supervision and training to colleagues.

Experience of working psychologically with adults with a learning disability and / or other neurodiverse conditions will be an advantage. Regular supervision from qualified clinicians will be provided, and there are good opportunities for further training within the Trust.

Person Specification


Education and Qualification

* Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society and the HCPC.
* HCPC registered practitioner psychologist


Knowledge and Experience

* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings.
* Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including severe and enduring mental health problems, psychosis and personality disorder. This includes maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the possibility of physical abuse.
* Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariable data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
* Clinical experience working with adults with learning disability


Skills and Competencies

* Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management. Skills in evidence based psychological interventions.
* Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
* Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
