The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences is seeking to appoint a number of Assistant Lecturers.
You can find out more about the modules the School offers at the following link.
Purpose of the role
Assistant Lecturers support academic staff at the University by performing teaching or teaching-related duties in line with business need and affordability. This role also offers a development opportunity for postgraduate students to enhance their teaching skills in preparation for more senior positions and to achieve professional recognition.
Teaching should normally involve undergraduate classes, seminars, or demonstrations using existing materials. Lecturing duties, especially at the Masters level, are generally not undertaken by Assistant Lecturers unless related to a student's research interest and with prior approval from the Deputy Dean (Education). All teaching activities should be directed and supervised by the module supervisor, with marking conducted as per university policies and approval.
Assistant Lecturers will receive close supervision, including feedback, pastoral support, and guidance from the module supervisor, who will provide comprehensive background and assessment.
Main Duties
The main duties include:
* Teaching classes and ensuring students meet learning outcomes.
* Preparing lessons, reading, and planning.
* Holding office hours and engaging with students via email.
* Providing feedback on coursework and supporting student learning.
* Marking coursework assignments using FASER.
Applicant Requirements
Applicants should be in their second or third year of study in 2023-2024 and registered for a postgraduate research degree at the University of Essex during this period. First-year students with relevant teaching experience will also be considered.
Applicants must have a good knowledge of the subject area, an undergraduate degree in a relevant field, and have achieved descriptor 1 of the UK Professional Standards Framework (CADENZA) by the end of the second term of teaching. Prior CADENZA accreditation is required for those who have previously taught within the School.
Contractual Arrangements
The hours per week depend on the classes undertaken. The position is paid at Grade 7 SP 27 (£18.09/hour) and offered as a fixed-term contract until postgraduate studies are completed or extended.
Support and Development
Assistant Lecturers must engage in professional development, aiming to achieve Associate Fellowship of the HEA (CADENZA) within their first year, with paid training provided. Training includes central induction, online modules, and CADENZA application preparation.
ALs are expected to participate in wider citizenship activities such as module development, review, and departmental representation.
Application Process
Applications should be sent by 5 pm on Friday, 29 September 2023. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Head of Department or their nominee, with feedback provided upon request.
