At East Midlands Railway, we’re proud to be One Team. Every day, our 2,600 colleagues work together to keep people safe, put customers first and build a sustainable railway for the East Midlands.
Nine times accredited as a Top Employer and Gold accredited against the Inclusive Employers Standard, we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels empowered to bring their authentic self to work.
We’re now recruiting future Platform Assistants to join #TeamEMR at Nottingham Station.
About the role
Our Platform Assistants are at the heart of the station. They are often the first face customers see and the last one they remember.
This is a Safety Critical role, responsible for the safe dispatch of trains as well as delivering outstanding customer service on the platform.
You’ll be responsible for:
1. Ensuring the safe and punctual dispatch of train services
2. Supporting customers with information, guidance and wayfinding
3. Assisting passengers boarding and alighting trains, including those who need extra care or support
4. Supporting security checks at the station
5. Remaining visible, proactive and approachable at all times
6. Acting as an ambassador for EMR by going above and beyond for our customers
This is a fast-paced environment. During disruption or busy periods, you’ll need to think clearly, act confidently and remain calm under pressure while maintaining excellent service standards.
Hours & Shift Pattern
Most of our Platform Assistants work 37 hours per week over a 4-day working week.
This is a shift-based role covering the full operating day of the station. At Nottingham, the earliest book-on is 05:00 and the latest book-off is 23:15, so flexibility is essential.
Training & Safety
No railway experience? No problem.
Full training is provided, including classroom-based rules and procedures followed by a supported mentoring period on the station.
As this is a Safety Critical position, successful candidates will need to pass a medical assessment, including drugs and alcohol screening. This is a condition of employment.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for people who are:
7. Proactive and positive with a strong ‘can-do’ attitude
8. Comfortable working in a busy, operational environment
9. Focused on safety and attention to detail
10. Confident communicating with a wide range of customers
11. Reliable and committed to teamwork
Benefits
As part of #TeamEMR, you’ll enjoy:
12. Free travel on the EMR network
13. Up to 75% discounted travel across the national rail network
14. Friends & Family discounted tickets
15. Defined benefit railway pension scheme
16. Access to a comprehensive employee benefits portal
17. Cycle to Work scheme
18. And much more
What happens next?
Submit your online application and upload your CV.
As we operate a blind screening process, please remove all personal information, including your name, from your CV before uploading.
If successful through the recruitment process, you’ll either be offered a role (subject to availability) or placed in our talent pool for up to 12 months. If a vacancy becomes available during that time, we’ll contact you directly — there’s no need to reapply.
Our Commitment to Inclusion
At EMR, we are committed to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We recognise that women and ethnic minority groups are currently under-represented in parts of our organisation and we are actively working to change that.
We warmly welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences, and particularly encourage applications from those who identify with under-represented groups.
