Clinical Healthcare Support Worker, Band 3 (23 hours a week)

Ward 9a have an exciting opportunity for a healthcare support worker for 23 hours per week who can work flexibly. Shift patterns cover 24 hours a day, 7 days per week; including night shifts, early, late & long day shifts plus weekends on a fair rota basis.

The gynaecology in-patient ward is co-located with the emergency gynaecology assessment unit within the ward area. This is a chance to be a part of developing team & an evolving, responsive service. We are dedicated to providing quality care & treatment to our patients. We look forward to an enthusiastic, compassionate & caring member of staff joining the team.

Additional working pattern details: Long days and nights. 2 x each week. Occasionally late shifts and earlies required.


Main duties of the job

In this fast paced role, you will be required to assist our clinical teams in providing exemplary care within our department. Your HCA duties will include routine tasks related to the delivery of care to ensure our patients' health and wellbeing.

You will be required to undertake specific delegated tasks after appropriate training.

You will need to be organised and flexible and be able to respond to the changing working environment.

Often our patients can be going through a distressing event in their lives and you will be expected to use your communication skills effectively to help provide the support and help that they need.

You will need to be able to escalate any change in a patient's condition to the Registered Nurse.

You are expected to act as a chaperone to women while clinical examination is undertaken and assist the clinical team with procedures that are taking place.

The ability to maintain confidentiality and have an awareness of safeguarding issues is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Aptitude Required

* Basic numeracy and literacy.
* Knowledge of basic nursing and personal care of women including those who are pregnant
* Appropriate verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills.
* Flexible and responsive to working environment.
* Practical ability, with prioritisation and time management skills.
* Demonstrates potential for further development and willing to work towards attainment of appropriate Trust competencies for Health Care Assistant
* Willing to develop housekeeping, IT and clerical skills in order to contribute to the maintenance of the environment
* Be aware of own limitations and the need for continuing education and personal development. Communicate these needs to the department manager as they arise

* Participates in the induction of new Health Care Assistants
* Contributes to the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment challenging all poor practice particularly around hand hygiene of any member of staff
* Assists with stock ordering and supplies maintenance including CSSD supplies
* Maintain own mandatory training requirement
* Continue with own personal development as agreed at appraisal/performance review
* Provide information to the patient for gynaecology procedure to be undertaken
* Assist patients and chaperone whilst clinical examination / procedures are being undertaken.
* Monitor and report changes in a patients condition to the registered nurse.
* Assist colleagues to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff, especially with the confused patient or those at high risk of falls.

Will be required to support patients receiving bad news including those that can include life changing or life limiting news related to gynaecological conditions or issues

Physical Effort and Working Conditions

Will be required to work within recognised manual handling guidelines. Will be expected to frequently manoeuvre heavy patients/objects over 15kg using appropriate aids. Will have frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions and will be required to follow policies and procedures pertaining to bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations. Will be frequently required to work in confined areas, bending and kneeling. Will work within an unpredictable environment and work pattern. Will be exposed to distressing or emotional circumstance

Be aware of and adhere to all of the relevant Trust Policies and Guidelines e.g. sickness reporting, absence management and the uniform policy.

Be aware of issues relating to Information & clinical governance, Human Rights, Health & Safety and welfare of patients & colleagues.

Handle and label specimens safely and correctly

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

* Experience of documenting patient information
* Demonstrates an interest in women's health
* Be able to provide care and compassion to patients and their partners experiencing pregnancy loss
* Basic level in literacy and numeracy
* Experience of working in a team
* Able to communicate effectively including use of interpersonal skills
* Experience of working in a caring role
* Understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding issues
* Demonstrates an ability to provide care for a deteriorating patient and escalate concerns
* Demonstrates a sense of commitment of caring for people from all backgrounds and of all ages
* Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
* Completion of Care Certificate
