Specialty Doctor in Community Adult Mental Health

Job Summary

The post is a replacement 10 PA post. The Sedgefield treatment and intervention team is based in Spennymoor. The Team provides secondary mental health service input for all mental health conditions for the working age adult population. The team receives referrals mostly from GP surgeries via the central Access team and other sources such as Crisis team, Liaison Psychiatry and wards. The team provides specialist support to patients with significant mental health difficulties such as mood disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorder and adult neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and Autism. The Team is able to obtain expert advice from Trust‑wide specialist services which include an ADHD service, the Autism Spectrum Assessment Team and the eating disorder service. Crisis Team manages access to inpatient services. The post‑holder will develop effective working relationships with members of the Crisis Team and Inpatient Team by closely liaising with these services when patients are referred to the crisis team or need an alternative to hospital beds, which will be managed by the crisis team, and patients who need to be in hospital will be managed by the inpatient team. The post holder will join a dedicated multidisciplinary team and contribute to compassionate and evidence‑based patient care and service improvement.

* Monitoring of physical health of patients on psychotropic medications
* Prescribing and medication management
* Periodic home visits
* MDT meetings
* Formulation meetings
* Clinical leadership
* Mental Health Act assessments (for section 12 approved)
* On‑call arrangements
* To contribute to service improvement/Audit

Teaching & Training

Essential

* Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training

CPD & Appraisal

Essential

* Participated in continuous professional development
* Evidence of annual appraisal and commitment to appraisal and revalidation


Qualifications

Essential

* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
* At least 4 years postgraduate experience, including at least 2 years in a core psychiatry training programme in the UK or abroad
* Approved under S12 of MHA or able to achieve within 6 months of appointment

Desirable

* MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification


Clinical Knowledge & Skills

Essential

* Good knowledge of psychiatry
* Excellent clinical skills using bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge

Desirable

* Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty


Research, Audit & Quality Improvement

Essential

* Has actively participated in clinical audit

Desirable

* Shows commitment to quality through knowledge of quality improvement and lean thinking methodology
* Participated in research and/or service improvement
