Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 qualified Clinician to deliver Specialist Podiatry care for MSK in the community setting of the borough of Ealing for 22.5hours per week.

This post requires a person who is highly specialised and has extensive knowledge, clinical skills and experience at working at a level in the field of MSK/Biomechanics Podiatry. Providing comprehensive care for patients with complex MSK foot problems. Providing education to health care staff and patients on management of core Podiatry and MSK issues.

The post holder will be clinically responsible for treatment of the MSK caseload working autonomously as well as work as part of the wider Podiatry team. You will be expected to lead on MSK and provide support and education to junior staff, other HCPs and your peers. You will also be expected to support core Podiatry and hold a home visit caseload. You will also be expected to carry out patient group education for MSK/Biomechanics.

The post holder will also line manage and supervise junior staff members within the team; delivering supervision, sickness meetings and support to that staff member. You will also deputise on behalf of the service manager on a rotational basis.

Main duties of the job

To work within the specialist area of Podiatric biomechanics/MSK in the management of a broad range of lower limb, gait and orthopedic/musculoskeletal related conditions providing a high-quality care.


The post holder will provide professional and clinical leadership on the strategic development, planning and operational delivery of all Podiatry MSK services within the team including “high-risk” MSK service across care settings in Community/Acute sites.


They will also manufacture and modify a range of foot orthotics and order and advice patients on bespoke and over the counter Insoles.
The post requires accepting emergency referrals from GPs, community/acute podiatrists, and other health professionals and will provide responsive specialist care. There will be a need for education and up-skilling of clinical and care staff. There will also be a responsibility for patient education and working with education programmes and competency frameworks within the trust i.e Type 1 and type 2 education, along with upskilling band 4, 5-6, 6-7, apprenticeships, students, work experience, cadets, careers days and volunteers.


As part of the Podiatry service, the post will be based in a variety of settings within Ealing Community Partners but can be asked to support other parts of the trust i.e. Prison service or homelessness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

MAIN SPECIALIST DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MSK Lead:

1. To undertake clinical assessment and diagnosis of biomechanical/musculoskeletal cases, formulate and carry out treatments. To undertake High risk biomechanical assessment, gait analysis and orthotic provision and advice for patients with a range of underlying conditions.

2. To apply knowledge of biomechanics and its role in wound care including the practical use of pressure relieving devices in the treatment of complex diabetes foot problems e.g. Air cast walkers, slipper cast, surgical footwear and total contact casting.

3. To advice, provide leaflets digital or physical and educate patients on exercises, devises and other therapies relevant to their condition individually or in a group setting.

4. To develop and influence the ongoing operational/strategic planning of the podiatry MSK patients including the “high risk” category patients and lead local implementation relevant to service delivery in conjunction with the Service Manager.
5. To use clinical reasoning and decision-making skills to provide in the assessment, diagnosis, treatments of patients.

6. To develop and maintain skills required to practice at an advanced level and use an extended scope of practice beyond that of podiatry (including but not limited to: referral for and interpretation of x-rays and other imaging, pathology reports, post-operative wound management).
7. Communicate effectively with patients regarding treatments/ treatment options in an understandable way, enabling and giving the patients options to agree their care.
8. To educate and empower patients regarding their care.
9. To review and evaluate treatments and interventions.
10. To be able to prescribe a wide range of foot orthotics based on clinical indications.
11. To make appropriate referrals to other disciplines.
12. To act as a source of expertise in the management of biomechanics lower limb problems to podiatrists and other health care professionals
13. To order appropriate biomechanics stock and order custom made insoles.

14. To have the ability to cope with unpredictable work patterns as necessitated in community care clinics.
