About us
The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury, is one of the UK’s most successful regional theatres (UK Theatre of the Year, 2022). Our mission is to serve as a hub for the performing arts in Kent, fostering regional cultural development.
We host West End musicals, national companies, a symphony orchestra season, and high-profile tours in our 1,200-seat Main House. Next year, we will produce large-scale plays made in Kent and tour nationally. Our 150-seat Studio focuses on new ideas, including R&D with resident and visiting companies, sharings, and shows.
Our work with young people emphasizes skills development, including a UAL Level 3 Performing Arts course with East Kent Colleges, and hosting Matthew Bourne’s Cygnet School and the RSC’s Associate Theatre. We recently launched our Writers’ Room to develop regional talent. As the largest performing arts employer in the region, we offer apprenticeships and work experience to over 100 young people annually.
We are developing major capital projects, including transforming the historic Poor Priests’ Hospital into a Creative Learning Centre and planning long-term theatre development to enhance technical and producing capacities.
Our investment in loyalty strategies has cultivated strong, engaged audiences. We have received industry recognition, including a Stage Award and a Workforce Award from UK Theatre, for our innovative approaches and People Plan.
We are a Creative Green organisation committed to environmental sustainability and climate action.
The Marlowe Theatre is an inclusive employer. We value diversity and recruit based on merit through fair competition. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds, including veterans, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, age, neurodiversity, disability, citizenship, or other characteristics.
