Job Overview

Specialty Doctor – Frays Ward
Hillingdon Mental Health Hospital
Permanent, Full‑time (10 PA days)
We are seeking a Specialty Doctor for the Acute Service at Riverside Centre in Hillingdon Hospital who is looking to increase their experience in psychiatry.

The post holder will provide inpatient care for all patients admitted to Frays Ward under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist. They will also undertake assessments in conjunction with nursing and other multidisciplinary team members, and provide support and advice to referring services when admission is not required. Excellent communication, teamwork and basic knowledge of physical health conditions are essential.

Main duties of the job

Frays Ward is part of the Acute Service Line at Riverside Centre, Hillingdon Hospital site:

* Frays Ward – 18 beds (male)
* Crane Ward – 18 beds (female)
* Colne Ward – 8 beds (PICU, male)
The acute wards serve patients aged 18 and over, mainly from Hillingdon but also from neighbouring boroughs. Nursing and medical teams are supported by occupational therapy, psychology, sports instruction and peer support workers.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities and Duties

* Detailed clerking, history taking and initiation of all necessary investigations and assessments for patients.
* Establish, initiate and evaluate treatment plans and risk assessments in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, under the supervision of a Specialist Grade doctor.
* Interview relatives and informal carers of patients as required.
* Make referrals to other disciplines and services both within the MDT and externally where appropriate.
* Adhere to Trust, BMHS and local policies, including medicines management and physical healthcare.
* Prepare and present medico‑legal reports for Managers' hearings and the Medial Health Review Tribunals for in‑patients.
* Complete full risk assessments of all in‑patients with the MDT.
* Liaise with all external agencies as required.
* Be part of the 2nd on‑call rota (1 in 10) and attend the wards at weekends.

Continuing Professional Development

* Participate in CPD; up to 30 days paid study leave in any three‑year period. Training requests are considered in line with post needs and service requirements and supported by local budgets where appropriate.
* Undergo an annual appraisal and maintain a Personal Development Plan.
* If not already a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, be encouraged to become an Affiliate.

Study and Training

* This is not an approved training post; suitable for doctors who have no approved training post or wish to gain experience before specialist training.
* Formal in‑service training includes academic afternoons, case discussions and a journal club.
* Teach as part of the internal trainees teaching programme and to medical students from Imperial College.
* Mandatory annual training: Fire and Safety, Clinical Risk Management (3 yearly), Control & Restraint (annual refreshers).

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

* Essential: Primary Medical Degree, full GMC registration, GMC Licence to Practice.
* Desirable: MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent; additional postgraduate qualification relevant to own specialty; Section 12 approval.

Experience

* Essential: Experience in general adult psychiatry; four years of full‑time postgraduate training, at least two in a specialty training programme.
* Desirable: Experience of service development/business planning; high‑level knowledge of national developments to improve efficiency and service quality.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualities

* Excellent communication and empathic skills; timely and effective verbal and written communication with patients, carers, colleagues and MDT.
* Demonstrable leadership and team‑working experience.
* Sound organisational skills, ability to work on own initiative.
* Awareness of legal responsibilities relevant to the role, including mental capacity and deprivation of liberty, data protection, equality and diversity.
