Join to apply for the ETCS Project Manager role at Northern
BUSINESS FUNCTION: Engineering
GRADE: ML2/SB1
SALARY: £50,211- £52,952 per annum
HOURS: 37 per week
People come to Northern for trains they can rely on, but it takes a lot behind the scenes to make that happen – and our Strategic Development team are the planners, problem-solvers and big thinkers helping to shape what comes next. As our new ETCS (European Train Control System) Project Manager, you’ll play a key part in the digital railway revolution – keeping complex, high-impact programmes running smoothly and making sure we meet our commitments to the industry.
What You'll Be Doing
This is a hands-on, detail-driven role where you'll lead on the coordination and reporting of ETCS programme activity. That includes pulling together information from across the business and our partners to create meaningful reports, keeping everything aligned with our governance processes.
You’ll manage our SharePoint systems, support document control, and help digitise and improve how we share data. There’s a big focus on making information clear, consistent and accessible – so you’ll be working closely with internal teams like Finance, IT and Service Planning, as well as external bodies such as Network Rail, CAF, and other train operators.
As the main contact for programme reporting, you’ll help the business stay on track by improving how we collect and manage information, guiding decision-making and keeping delivery efficient.
About You
Organisation, communication and tech-savviness – that's three things you'll bring to this role.
You’ve worked in a Programme Management Office (PMO) before, and you’re confident managing tools, reports and systems that keep everything moving. You’ll ideally have experience working towards a recognised qualification in programme or project management (such as PRINCE2 or MSP), and you’re comfortable using management software to get the job done.
A background in rail would be useful, but it’s not essential. What matters most is your ability to juggle deadlines, communicate across teams, and find smarter ways to do things. If you’ve ever helped introduce new processes, reporting tools or digital solutions into a project environment, even better.
What’s in it for you?
At Northern, we don’t just value our people - we go the extra mile to support them. Here’s a taste of what you can look forward to:

Why Northern?
We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
