Join Our New Community Safety Team

Are you passionate about making a real difference in communities? Do you thrive in a role where no two days are the same, and where your actions help people feel safe, supported, and proud of where they live?

Sunderland City Council is launching a new Community Safety Team as part of our bold vision for safer, stronger, and more resilient neighbourhoods. We’re looking for motivated, community-focused individuals to join us as Community Safety Specialists within our locality-based, multi-agency team.

This role is central to tackling complex antisocial behaviour and environmental crime. You will lead on detailed investigations, applying a wide range of enforcement tools and powers to address persistent locality concerns, support victims, and enhance community wellbeing.

About the Role
Working at the heart of our neighbourhoods, you’ll:

* Undertake complex investigations into antisocial behaviour and environmental crime
* Apply a range of legal tools and enforcement powers to address persistent locality issues
* Lead and support high-profile joint operations with key partner agencies
* Engage with residents, businesses, and local groups to build trust and gather intelligence
* Respond to incidents and provide tailored support to individuals and communities
* Conduct inspections and enforcement activities in accordance with legal and procedural requirements
* Gather, record, and present evidence to support legal proceedings and case management
* Collaborate closely with police, housing providers, and other agencies in a multi-disciplinary setting
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking committed individuals with a problem-solving mindset and the ability to work confidently in challenging situations. Ideally, you will have:
* Experience working in community safety, antisocial behaviour, environmental enforcement, or a related public protection field
* Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and Environmental Protection Act 1990
* Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence behaviours and build trust
* Confidence in using enforcement powers appropriately and proportionately
* The ability to work independently and as part of a wider multi-agency team
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a busy, varied workload
* A commitment to public service, fairness, and delivering positive community outcomes
Please note: Appointment to this post will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Why work for Sunderland City Council?
* Automatic enrolment into the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), offering secure and flexible retirement benefits
* Flexible working hours through our flexi-time scheme
* You’ll receive 26 days annual leave (31 after 5 years’ continuous service), plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase additional leave through the Council’s flexible benefits scheme
* Ongoing training, professional development, and career progression opportunities
* A supportive, collaborative, and inclusive working environment where your contribution makes a difference
