Job overview

The Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) is a capability within the ambulance service required to provide paramedic level care to patients caught within hazardous situations and subsequently increasing their chances of survival. These situations may be large scale major incidents, or they may include more routine incidents involving working at height, difficult access or in water. In addition to the extensive additional training in specialist capabilities and working within safe systems of work, HART become proficient in the use of a wide range of specialist protective clothing and incident management equipment.

We are looking for successful candidates for the position of ‘HART Team Educator’ to join SCAS HART and to develop and co-ordinate training and education aspects for the HART Teams.

As a HART Team Educator, you will respond to complex and possibly protracted incidents. You will deliver paramedic interventions through key HART capability areas.

You will be required to facilitate the ongoing education of HART staff working with both internal and external partner agencies.


Main duties of the job

Applicants should be aware that HART is both a national and local ambulance capability. In the event of large-scale incidents or exercises, staff may occasionally be required to work nationally anywhere in the UK.

The shortlisted candidates in addition to getting the usual interview will have the following assessments:

* HART written paper (Mostly MCQ) combined general HART knowledge and Incident Command – source for this is Pro-Clus, NARU Command & Control Guidance & JESIP
* Presentation on constructing a HART Training Week (specifics and preparation to be completed on the day of interview)

Corporate Induction

It’s really important for us to ensure you have the best onboarding experience which allows you to feel a sense of belonging from the start. To help with this, we will book your Corporate Induction as soon as we possibly can (depending on availability).

All new starters need to attend our *Corporate Induction in person, this is held over one and half days from our educational centres based in: Newbury (Berkshire), Bicester (Oxfordshire) or Whiteley (Hampshire). More specific details will be sent to you once your start date has been confirmed.

*Please note – depending on your role additional training may be required following on from your corporate induction.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Detailed information regarding the criteria required for a HART Educator is available within the Job Description and Person Specification, however, some of the essential criteria are:

* HCPC Registered Paramedic, with extensive operational experience
* HART Modules 1-4 qualified (Previously EDBA, IRU and USAR)
* Emergency Driving Qualification
* Experience of supporting staff in achieving effective and safe clinical practice (e.g. as Field Based Assessor, Clinical Supervisor or practice mentor)
* Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with people at all levels
* Evidence of a proactive approach to own CPD and development of professional practice
* You will be able to demonstrate competence in team working, self-discipline, communication skills, adaptability, planning skills and decision making.
* You must have a good level of fitness be comfortable working at height and in confined/restricted spaces and be capable of swimming 100 meters as a minimum.
* It is essential you weigh less than 115kg for operational reason
* HART Team Educators will develop and maintain good working relationships with other emergency services, NHS Trusts and public sector agencies including the HART Team, HART Managers, Resilience & Specialist Operations Managers, Operational Trust staff, Air Ambulance Services, Fire and Rescue Service, Fire Service Specialist Teams (USAR,

Technical Rescue, Water Rescue), Police, British Transport Police, Local hospitals, Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Maritime Rescue Organisations and Mountain/Cave Rescue.

* HART Team Educators will promote HART awareness to other Ambulance Staff and if required represent the Trust and emergency services in the public arena and promote its image as a professional and competent service Also actively support and promote the aims and objectives of the Trust’s HART capability and be responsible for the personal contribution to the development of the HART team and where necessary, the testing of new initiative
* Maintain confidentiality in relation to personal information held for patients and colleagues using a non-identifiable alternative, where pracise Ensure that access to any personal information is processed on a strictly need to know basis in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and records management guidanc
* Communicate with a range SCAS trust members such as managers and others as required on subjects such as risk, policy, clinical governance, as well as clinical matter
* Communicate to relevant health professionals effectively over clinical issues including patient informatio
* Provide guidance and advice to patients and other members of the public appropriate to training received, using a range of interpersonal skills according to individual need
* Communicate with tact, empathy and understanding to individuals and groups on a range of complex, potentially stressful and sensitive subjects, often whilst overcoming various barriers to communicat
* Communicate effectively with a wide range of other healthcare professionals, individuals and agencies
* Support Trust policy on equality, diversity and the rights of all individuals

Qualifications


Essential criteria

* HCPC State Registered Paramedic
* Evidence of a proactive approach to own CPD and development of professional practice
* Trained and qualified in all HART competencies
* IHCD or FutureQuals Emergency Driving Qualification


Desirable criteria

* Qualified as an Operational Commander eg. NARU Command Course
* Successful completion of HAZMAT or military NBC course
* SCAS CBRN Team Member
* Teaching/educational/instructional methods qualification


Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Demonstrable operational ambulance experience
* Experience working in a multi-agency environment
* Experience of delivering learning
* Experience of supporting staff in achieving effective and safe clinical practice (e.g. as Field Based Assessor, Clinical Supervisor or practice mentor)
* Experience in HART operations
