Portering Operative

Part-time - 1300-1930 hours
Salary: £24,169 pro rata, per annum - plus Serco benefits.
Key Purpose:
To provide a comprehensive, quality, efficient, and cost-effective Portering service within the hospital, ensuring patient care and customer service are prioritized, in line with contractual requirements.
Main Accountabilities:
1. Ensure all Portering tasks are performed professionally, competently, and safely, following HSE Guidelines and safe working practices.
2. Transport deceased patients from A&E and/or Wards to the mortuary.
3. Act as key holder for the mortuary out of hours to support viewings and legal processes, such as certification of death.
4. Remove soiled laundry from Wards and theatres, ensuring delivery to the Laundry in accordance with Infection Control Regulations and HSE Safe Working practices.
5. Respond to cardio arrests, providing trolley and supporting equipment during incidents.
6. Maintain all equipment in a clean and hygienic state; perform weekend cleaning rota for wheelchairs.
7. Ensure all equipment used meets required standards for safe operation.
8. Transport and collect medical gases across departments and wards regularly.
9. Transport patients to and from X-ray (including out of hours).
10. Support the Patient Ambassador/Service Manager or Soft Services Lead to ensure compliance with ISO Regulations, quality, and environmental policies.
11. Meet performance targets in line with standards.
12. Maintain appropriate records in line with service delivery.
13. Manage tasks via Portertrac, ensuring they are accepted, started, and completed according to SLAs.
14. Deliver specimens, blood samples to the Pathology department, and controlled drugs books to the Pharmacy, following SOPs of the Pneumatic Tube System.
15. Assist with providing clean linen as needed.
16. Carry out emergency transportation of patients.
17. Proactively manage HSE initiatives to ensure a safe working environment.
18. Report risks to the Patient Ambassador and/or Service Manager.
19. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Patient Ambassador, Service Manager, or Soft Services Lead.
Requirements for the role:
* This is a physically demanding role requiring mobility and manual handling skills.
* NVQ or equivalent qualification.
* Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
* Basic understanding of Health & Safety practices.
* Previous hospital or service environment experience.
* Strong customer service skills, including clear verbal communication.
* Understanding of patient care, infection control, and safety protocols.
* IT literacy to support operational needs.
