Job Summary
A Geriatric Medicine Consultant is required to expand OPAL, FSDEC & FAU services at Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
The role offers an opportunity to shape early frailty pathway and deliver comprehensive geriatric assessment, reduce avoidable admissions, improve ED flow, shorten length of stay, and support safe discharge aligned with national acute frailty standards.
Responsibilities
* Deliver consultant‑led frailty assessment and decision making for Frailty SDEC operational 08:00‑20:00, 7 days per week, via a multi‑consultant rota (3.55 WTE).
* Work closely with the Frailty Navigator and OPAL team to provide early identification, triage and streaming at the hospital front door.
* Provide senior input to the Frailty Assessment Unit (FAU) for short‑stay (24‑48 hour) geriatric assessment and stabilisation.
* Participate in the daily 11:00 North Locality Frailty MDT involving community GPs, frailty nurses and acute medical team to ensure safe and coordinated transitions of care.
* Supervise resident doctors and allied health professionals.
* Engage in multidisciplinary collaboration and communication.
Supporting Professional Activities
* Clinical teaching, supervision and educational activities.
* Clinical governance, audit and quality improvement.
* Research and innovation projects.
* Service development and contribution to regional frailty strategy.
Optional Additional Responsibilities
* Acute medicine on call (if mutually agreed).
* Additional service development or clinical leadership roles.
Qualifications
* MRCP or equivalent; entered on the GMC Register and CCST in geriatric and general internal medicine within 6 months of interview.
* Higher degree is desirable.
Experience
* Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC specialist register in geriatric medicine and general (acute) medicine.
* Strong commitment to medical care of older adults and initiatives demonstrating enthusiasm.
* Comprehensive clinical experience in geriatric and general (acute) medicine.
* Desirable: record of research or clinical audit interest in acute care of older patients, evidence of publications or formal reports, or a period of research leading to a higher degree.
Salary and Working Pattern
£113,565.00 to £150,569.00 per year, permanent contract, full‑time.
