The department of Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospitals Plymouth is looking to appoint a new consultant colleague to join our existing team of 19 Intensivists who lead the delivery of exceptional quality care to diverse range of General and Neurosciences Intensive Care patients in a busy Tertiary and Major Trauma Centre.
Introduction to the Role
This is a full‑time substantive Intensive Care Consultant post suitable for an enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated individual who wants to practice the best intensive care medicine for a broad range of patients, while developing interests in education, academia or clinical management, all while living in one of the most stunning parts of the country. Our consultant team includes Intensivists who provide clinical sessions in other specialties such as Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine, and individuals with significant academic roles at the University of Plymouth or who support the regional critical care transfer service (Retrieve).

Main Duties of the Job
Title: Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine. Relationships: The post holder will interact with members of the medical teams, nursing staff and all other hospital staff involved in patient care. The post holder will also be a member of the directorate and interact with colleagues and trainees.
The post holder will be managerially responsible to the Clinical Director and professionally responsible to the Medical Director.
This post is open to any suitably qualified applicant who holds a CCT or equivalent in Intensive Care Medicine or is within 6 months of completing training. Applicants who have a single CCT in ICM or who hold joint or dual CCTs with anaesthesia, medicine or emergency medicine are welcomed. Applicants qualified before the existence of the ICM CCT should contact the Service Line Director to discuss relevant equivalent experience.

Job Responsibilities
Together with the other Intensive Care consultants, the post holder will be responsible for supervising patient management within the General and Neurosurgical Intensive Care Units and for delivering high‑quality intensive care within the Trust. The post holder will also be expected to be actively involved in governance, administration, teaching, continuing medical education, research, audit and quality‑improvement activities of the department. Involvement in research will be encouraged, and the post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to undergraduate teaching for the Plymouth University Peninsula Medical School.
The current 18‑week rolling job programme is illustrated below and may be subject to modification by negotiation with the post holder and Service Line Director. The new post holder will work alongside, and in a similar manner to, the existing consultant body. All intensive care sessions are undertaken in blocks whenever possible to improve continuity of care. Day‑time sessions (Monday–Sunday) commence at 08:00 and finish at 18:00/19:00. The on‑call consultant is present for an evening session between 17:00 and 21:00. After 21:00 the consultant provides a non‑resident on‑call service for intensive care. The overlap between the daytime and on‑call consultant ensures an adequate handover. All Intensive Care Consultants work an annualised job plan and provide flexibility for coverage during leave. Currently the on‑call rota is on a 1:18 nights basis with weekend work 1:6 weekends.
Person Specification
Essential
* Full GMC registration
* On the Specialist Register of the GMC, or within 6 months of achieving this
* FFICM, EDIC or Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine, or equivalent
* FRCA, MRCP, FCEM or equivalent within dual specialty (if applicable)
* Training and experience equivalent to Advanced Level in Intensive Care Medicine, as defined by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine
* Wide practical experience and understanding of intensive care medicine
* Demonstrable recent experience managing the clinical workload of a large multidisciplinary intensive care unit to the highest possible standards
* Information technology skills
* Experience in audit and clinical governance
* Evidence of the ability to manage the clinical team of a large intensive care unit
* Evidence of ability and commitment to teach trainees, undergraduates, nursing staff and other professions
* A well‑presented CV
* An ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff, both orally and in writing
* Ability to form constructive and effective professional relationships with existing staff
* Ability to work in a team
* Ability to delegate appropriately
