Overview
This post is offered on a full time basis (10 PA) with consideration for less than full time. It provides an exciting opportunity to join a group of Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons delivering elective orthopaedic and trauma services to a population of approximately 400,000 in the Wakefield and Kirklees area of Yorkshire. Duties will be based primarily at the Trauma Unit (Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield) and Elective Orthopaedic Surgical Hub (Pontefract General Infirmary), with all medical staff delivering care across sites.
Main duties
The post involves working as part of the Orthopaedic team to provide a comprehensive service including general adult and paediatric orthopaedic trauma. Responsibilities include continuing clinical oversight of patients under care, delivering evidence-based care in a multidisciplinary setting, and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and multi-professional educational development (higher educational qualifications desirable). It includes a 1:16 on-call commitment for Urgent and Emergency Care and delivering a Foot & Ankle Surgical service (elective day case and inpatient surgery, routine and complex trauma, outpatient assessment, investigations and treatment). Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least 1 SPA within the core 10 PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with service requirements and candidate skills.

Essential person specification requirements
To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
* Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
* Medical Degree from recognised medical school
* FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent and ATLS provider
* Ability to undertake independent Consultant practice in general orthopaedics & trauma
* Fellowship experience in foot & ankle surgery (minimum 6 months)
* Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving
* Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
* Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
* Research skills: publication of research articles and understanding of research methodology
* Evidence of relevant peer-reviewed papers or publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report – not abstracts or letters)
* Knowledge of NHS structures and management arrangements
* Good time management
* Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust and its services

About the role
We are seeking a 12-month Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to join a team of 18 Orthopaedic Consultants providing a range of acute and elective services. The post is predominantly focused on Lower Limb Surgery with a sub-specialty interest in Foot and Ankle surgery; a one-year fellowship in this sub-specialty is desirable. The candidate must demonstrate in-depth training in trauma surgery. The post will be based mainly at Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals, with willingness to work at the Dewsbury Hospital site.
