Job title: Teacher - Post-Primary
Reports to: Principal
Professional duties of a teacher
* Exercise of general professional duties as circumstances may require, under reasonable direction of the principal or board.
* Perform such particular duties as may be reasonably assigned from time to time by the principal or board.
* Planning: planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching to pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development.
* General duties: promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters; maintaining records and reporting; communicating with parents; liaising with external bodies; participating in meetings.
* Assessment/Reporting: providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils and groups.
* Staff Development/Professional Development: participating in staff development and performance review; reviewing teaching methods and programmes; contributing to course material and development.
* Discipline/Health and Safety: maintaining good order and safeguarding pupils’ health and safety; participating in relevant school meetings.
* Public Examinations: participating in arrangements for pupil preparation for public examinations, assessment, and supervision during examinations.
* Management/Administration: contributing to staff selection and development, coordinating work of other teachers, involvement in curriculum, organisation and pastoral arrangements; administrative tasks related to duties; attendance and supervision of pupils as required.
* Workload and hours: be available for the standard teaching year and comply with working time regulations; provide cover as required and take breaks as mandated; maintain appropriate hours as set by the employing authority.
* Additional notes: the post is subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not rigid; duties may be adjusted; the post holder should promote equality and good relations in line with NI law.

Person specification
Section 1 – Essential Criteria
* Hold a teaching qualification that meets requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
* Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach English as the main subject.
* Experience: Minimum 1 year teaching English at Key Stage 3 and 4 with positive learning outcomes; experience using diverse teaching strategies; experience employing digital media/technology to enhance learning.
* Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; pre-employment checks completed.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Interviews)
* Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.
* Skills/Abilities: effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; collaborative work with pupils, parents, and staff; ability to motivate self and others.
* Values: alignment with the school ethos and values.
Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
* 3+ years of experience teaching English at Key Stages 3 and 4; classroom approaches supporting diverse abilities including SEND; monitoring pupil progress and interventions.
Disclosure of criminal background
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 applies to regulated activity with children and young people. If appointed to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required.
