Specialised Physiotherapist – Stroke

The closing date is 02 November 2025

This role involves working across St George's two Stroke services, the Hyperacute Stroke Unit and Acute Stroke Unit.

The role will provide a high standard of physiotherapy service to patients within the Hyperacute and Acute Stroke Units across 3 days a week.

The Neurosciences and Therapies directorates are dynamic and innovative, and champion new ideas and developments from all team members. All services are formed of forward thinking, highly skilled and experienced Band 8a and B7 therapists with a range of specialisms across all domains of Neurotherapies.


Main duties of the job

Undertakes a specialised neurological assessment of own workload of patients, who may have complex presentations, and from this assessment formulates a treatment plan and carries out this treatment as an autonomous practitioner.

Supervises and teaches peers, recently qualified physiotherapists/physiotherapy assistants/students, and involved in teaching MDT staff.

Undertakes evidence-based projects, including making recommendations for change in practice and participating in departmental research and audit as appropriate.

Potential to be involved in Neuromuscular Clinical Trial portfolio for additional 1 day per week.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Neurosciences Physiotherapy service at St George's Hospital across the Stroke teams. The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing a high standard of physiotherapy assessment, treatment and advice to people following stroke.

There is also the potential to work as part of the Neuromuscular Clinical Research team providing support for the neuromuscular clinical research team and carry out outcome measures for the clinical trials. This can be discussed further prior to applying for the role or if invited to interview.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* oDegree or equivalent in physiotherapy
* oHPC registration
* oEvidence of CPD, in the form of a detailed personal development portfolio, including attendance at recent post graduate courses relevant to the clinical field
* oSpecial interest group membership


Experience

* Post registration experience as a Band 5 rotational therapist
* Experience of working in the NHS (can include undergraduate experience)
* Broad range of experience at B5 level including rotations in ICU, medical, surgery, neurology, outpatients and elderly care
* Participation in on-call and weekend rota
* Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team
* Ability to autonomously form a sound prognosis and advise other members of the MDT
* oPrevious experience at Band 6 level
* oStudent supervision / clinical education
* oExperience of the research process
* oTeaching experience in in-service programmes
* oCommittee membership, e.g. health and safety


Other

* Ability to work as a team member


Skills and Knowledge

* Remains updated with professional practice and new research and implements this into clinical practice
* Good assessment skills based on a sound clinical reasoning approach including the assessment of symptom behaviour, history taking and gathering of physical/objective testing and hypothesis formation
* Ability to work with multi/interdisciplinary team and set team goals
* Ability to organise, prioritise, delegate and work autonomously
* Understanding of Clinical Governance and the implications for physiotherapy services including experience of quality issues and audit
* Supervision of other staff, e.g. physiotherapy assistant, students
* Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner
* Willingness to deliver and actively engage in staff training
* Ability to keep legible and accurate notes in English in the POMR system
* Ability to cope with working in a stressful environment
* Able to motivate self and others
* Ability to run courses - internal / external
* Evidence of participation in research / audit
