A unique opportunity for an Occupational Therapy Assistant who wants to gain more experience and work on an inpatient mental health forensic unit with service users experiencing mental health difficulties.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant post will enable a person to move on to the apprenticeship scheme, gain skills working with this client group, and support the therapy team. The post holder will be allocated a delegated patient caseload by the qualified OT, work independently to assess care needs, modify treatment plans, and deliver care within the scope of practice. The practitioner will delegate tasks to team members, supervise lower banding occupational therapy staff, and work autonomously within a ward environment to develop and deliver interventions that make a real difference to people’s lives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Work in collaboration with the service user, their support network and the MDT to manage mental health and related risks.
* Work with the service user to achieve identified goals.
* Work individually or in groups with service users as indicated.
* Communicate with a range of people including service users, colleagues and other healthcare professionals on complex and sensitive matters using verbal, written and IT methods.

* Observe patient behaviour, verbal and non-verbal communication and act on and report complex risks, recording as necessary.
* Ensure service user confidentiality is kept at all times and that all records and communications are kept in line with Trust policy.
* Be familiar with patient risk assessment, plan and develop interventions reflecting it.
* Ensure all relevant information is recorded accurately in the appropriate record system and that all records are completed in line with the organisation’s record management procedures.
* Act when necessary in the service user’s best interest even when this may not be their expressed wish.
* Liaise with outside agencies, family, carers, community agencies, etc.
* Effectively deal with any adverse situation.
* Work effectively with the multi-disciplinary team.
* Use evidence-based interventions and approaches.
