SHEQ Advisor
Department: Water
Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time
Location: Cheshire
Reporting To: Rachel Watkinson
Description
OCU Group is seeking a SHEQ Advisor to support water infrastructure projects across the UK, with the role based in Cheshire.
This position sits within the Regional SHEQ Team and plays a key part in supporting the safe, compliant, and high-quality delivery of operational works across the Water sector. The role would suit either an experienced SHEQ professional or someone from a utilities/construction background looking to develop within a forward-thinking and growing business.
The successful candidate will support operational teams delivering a range of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, helping to ensure that health, safety, environmental, and quality standards are consistently applied and improved across all activities.
Key Responsibilities
As a SHEQ Advisor, you will provide operational support and guidance to delivery teams across the region, helping to embed strong SHEQ culture and best practice across all project activities. You will work closely with operational management teams to support safe systems of work, improve performance, and ensure compliance with company and legislative requirements.
You will monitor SHEQ performance across projects, reviewing both leading and lagging indicators, identifying trends, and supporting the implementation of corrective and improvement actions. A key part of the role will be engaging directly with site teams, ensuring standards are understood, applied, and continuously improved.
You will conduct site audits and inspections, support incident and accident investigations, and ensure lessons learned are effectively captured and shared across the business. You will also play an active role in promoting positive behaviours, challenging unsafe practices, and reinforcing OCU’s safety mindset across all levels of the workforce.
The role includes supporting mobilisation activities for new contracts and projects, assisting with the development of risk assessments, method statements, SHE plans, and Construction Phase Plans in line with CDM requirements. You will also contribute to SHE communications, inductions, training, and worker engagement activities to strengthen safety culture across the region.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
We are looking for a proactive and confident SHEQ professional with experience within utilities, construction, or infrastructure environments, ideally within the water or wastewater sector.
You should hold a NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent qualification as a minimum, with IOSH or IEMA membership desirable. Strong knowledge of SHEQ principles, compliance frameworks, and best practice within operational environments is essential.
You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across site teams, management, clients, and subcontractors. A professional, organised, and proactive approach is key, along with the confidence to influence behaviours and drive continuous improvement.
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Office, are required, alongside the ability to analyse data, report on performance trends, and support decision-making.
A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across regional operational sites is essential.
