Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner
37.5 hours per week – NHS Plymouth Talking Therapies are recruiting a full‑time Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) to deliver guided self‑help and low‑intensity CBT within a stepped‑care model.
The role provides clinical and pedagogic training through the Post‑Graduate Cert/Graduate Psychological Therapies Practice course at Exeter University. Successful trainees will be supported to become accredited PWPs and, upon completion, will secure a Band 5 post within the service.
Responsibilities
* Assess patients with mild‑to‑moderate anxiety and depression and deliver low‑intensity treatments using computerised CBT, psycho‑educational courses and guided self‑help.
* Make case‑by‑case decisions on the suitability of new referrals, step‑up to high‑intensity care or refer to other services if required.
* Maintain accurate, confidential records and complete data collection within the service.
* Attend multidisciplinary meetings, supervision and agreed activity contracts to minimise waiting times and ensure timely treatment.
* Collaborate with GPs, secondary care and the Mental Health Framework to provide an integrated service.
* Educate and involve family or carer support where appropriate.
* Apply evidence‑based practice, stay up‑to‑date with NICE guidelines and national policy, and undertake continuous professional development (including 100 % participation in the Exeter University PWP training programme).
Qualifications
* Level 5 academic qualification or equivalent.
* No enrolment in other academic/training courses during the post; no HEE‑funded course in the last two years.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Excellent verbal and written communication, including telephone and virtual platforms.
* Strong therapeutic relational skills and empathy; ability to manage difficult conversations.
* Diary and workload management with good time‑management skills.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new IT systems.
* Experience working with people who have a mental health problem (either direct clinical work, volunteering or lived experience).
* Training and knowledge in CBT and the use of evidence‑based psycho‑educational resources.
* Understanding of the role of supervision in clinical practice and ability to self‑reflect.
* Knowledge of anxiety and depression presentation in primary care and the impact of marginalisation on mental health.
* Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* Psychology degree (undergraduate or postgraduate).
* Training in nursing, social work, occupational therapy, counselling or a related psychological therapy discipline.
* Formal risk‑assessment training or experience within clinical scope.
* Fluency in a language other than English.
* Experience in primary care settings with demonstrable clinical outcomes.
* Experience maintaining clinical notes, communication with other health professionals and use of community‑based resources.
* Demonstrated ability to meet academic deadlines and produce clinical recordings as part of training.
